I have been told that you can use your tesco club card vouchers here which seems a good idea. The zoo is quite large and means that you do need to do a lot of walking about. it can be really busy especially in the summer time but as it is open all year it may be better to visit at a quieter time. The hallowean nights are good fun for children but do wrap up warm as it gets cold. The colchester zoo is one of the better zoos that I have been to and I am looking forwards to going again soon. It surrounds the beautiful norman castle and has beautiful lawned areas, lovely flower displays all year round and also has a good childrens play area that is popular. It is set on a hill and so parts of it are quite steep so bear this in mind. The park hosts various events during the year including concerts and a really excellent fire work display that is hosted by the king coel kittens on behalf of local charities. It has a small boating lake were you can hire pedal boats for a short while and a bowling green too.The castle park at colchester is lovely. It has a really good selection of plants in the well stocked garden centre. Most of these are well priced and are around the £3.60 area for an individual pot. The dry garden area is lovely and can be seen as you walk in towards the garden centre. You do not have to pay to get in to the garden centre or the dry gardens and can still use the cafe with out paying the entrance fee. Have not as yet seen the main garden but will do so one day.The beth chatto gardens is at elmstead market on the out skirts of colchester and only a ten minute drive from there.
