This place a solely run business with an impressive collection of games (monopoly, top trumps) ect. They frequent card playing games held in the centre of the store involve Pokemon and yuigoh. The thing i dislike about this is complate nerds raging about thereYuigoh card victory. (C.B) The amount of lolage you can get out of these nerds is beyond belief, they consitently buy decks and chat up the poor girl behind the counter. Terrible meal - booked for 80th birthday. Inedible main course and starters that were a heap of sauce flavoured noodles with a few duck shavings that could have been anything. Needed to borrow steak knife to cut lamb then couldn't chew it - and I have all my own teeth unlike the eldery we took. Terrible value for money and to make it even worse the men say that the beer was warm too. Overcrowded and over stretched. I've only been in this restaurant once to get a take away but the food was so amazing I felt duty bound to spread the word.

The dish I had was Chicken Patia and it was delicious. Taking into account how polite the staff were, the care taken with service, and the appearance of the restaurant I got the impression that I hadn't just got lucky.

I'll certainly be revisiting the Raj Palace again... probably this friday for a sit down meal :o)

This is my favourite place for lunch in Colchester. There is seating upstairs and tables with a view down onto Sir Isaac's Walk to watch other shoppers go by. The tea is proper tea leaves and the food is all good and freshly made. No brown edges on the lettuce! Only one downside which is that if you sit near the kitchen door you can come out smelling of chips.This is my favourite place for lunch in Colchester. Rating: 5.00I've used Simply Living for curtain-making and having a chair re-upholstered and would recommend their service to anyone. It was less expensive than I expected after using another shop in Colchester for curtains and the results are beautiful. The shop is also a lovely place to browse for gifts and has unusual pieces of jewellery, Emma Bridgewater pottery and lots of accessories for the home. Needed to buy a new keyboard for my daughter so decided to see what my local shops had to offer. Ended up at Allegro Music who had a superb selection to choose from. The sales person was very helpful and knew all about the different models on display. I managed to get a great deal (better than on-line) and even had a free keyboard lesson as well. The Latte coffee was a sickly sweet concoction of syrup that came from some machine. The burger was dry as an old boot and covered in some E numbers parading themselves as relish. The service was automated but pleasant though quite slow, but it should always be rememebered that you can't polish a turd. we did get a reduction in our bill on the basis that we "hadn't enjoyed it". Food
Good solid food. Starters and desserts prettily served. Real cloths and napkins.

My main course was chicken with a generous portion of Yorkshire pudding and piece of stuffing the size of a triangle of thick doorstep toast.

The creme brulee was served in espresso coffee cups, and was runny. The chef apologized and said the blow torch wasn't working and he'd had to use the grill.

Not my problem. I had a baked cheesecake. Looking at my photo, it reminds me that the cheesecake had a pleasing extra, chocolate chips instead of the healthier sultanas. I have to admit that I am very partial to an unhealthy chocolate chip or two or three.

Service
The staff were very obliging. They fetched me a sewing kit to repair a loose ribbon although I wasn't staying at the hotel, only dining.

Chairs
Dining chairs were a mixture of plain wood and those with padded seats. I swapped my chair for one with a padded seat. Problem solved.

Anything wrong? A few light bulbs were missing. We sat debating whether it was a careful economy measure or just carelessness. One of the Ladies toilet cubicles was without a working light bulb. I mentioned it after the meal and the girl on the bar smiled and assured me she knew and was just about to fix it.

My group of more than twenty - in a private party with a speech - was very happy with the venue. Our committee had chosen this place for historic surroundings (suitable for the annual dinner of a traditional group with a speech by an MP) and value for money. Friendly local pub, with fantastic food! We eat there regularly and recommend it to guests (we run a B&B) who always return raving about the quality and variety of the food. Essentially the Plough is a proper 'old fashioned' country pub, which serves its local community well, and has great food to boot. If you are looking for a 'plastic pub' like a Hungry Horse, then this is not for you!!!
