I have been twice recently after being told it changed owners, once was about two weeks ago - the food was absolutely lovely, it was perfectly cooked, the waitresses were not amazing but the bar staff were a delight (a happy young lady who had a son who was very polite and well mannered, and a young man who also seemed nice, he was making sure we were ok the entire time). Then the second time we went, the main chef wasnt there so we ordered from the bar menu which was a range of home-cooked dishes the second chef was confident doing, and we were so impressed!
I really advise anyone to go here, its a perfect little english pub, amazing food and great staff for the most of it. I asked the bar lady about the owners, its all family run apart from the waitressing. I will definately go back here again.

It takes me and the missus,about 20 mins in the car to get to the Bay Horse at Heath Charnock,but it is well worth the drive.We probably go about once a month and the food is always spot on,from the beer battered cod(best i've ever tasted) either as a main course for about £8.50 or on a barmcake with chips £3.50 ish,to the the chicken breast wrapped in bacon and smothered in cheese £8.50 ish(again available on a barmcake £4.00 ish) to the best sweet chicken livers I have ever tasted(£4.50ish for a starter,very filling)The sweets are also very good but we are usualy to full to try.
We sort of found this pub by chance(after taking the dog for a run up Rivington) but are so glad we did.You do have to wait a bit for your food(as is displayed on menu board,as all food is cooked to order,no frozen crap ere) but I promise you it is worth the wait.
Nice log fires to warm you up,warm friendly staff to serve you and a top chef.
The Bay Horse at Heath Charnock is a bit out in the sticks,but with its great food and good prices on food and drink is well worth the journey.

Me and the wife called in tonight to enjoy the two meals for five pounds offer like we have done midweek for the past couple of weeks,when we arrived at about six pm the pub was quite busy,I ordered two drinks and two chicken burger meals and was abruptly told by the barmaid"you do know there is a thirty minute wait!") As we had just arrived I found this more than a bit snotty.We waited for 40 minutes,no food,so I ordered two large glasses of the house Chardonay,advertised behind the bar on a board @ £2.40 for a 250ml glass,when the same barmaid who served me earlier asked for £6.20(after she had poured the drinks) I questioned the price and she said "we have told the manader about it but he hasn't changed the board" I explained that that was false advertising to which she just shrugged.

Rating: 1.00Having come across the 'NEW Golden Lion' (up the road) by chance the other week (excellent food at excellent prices and is really worth a visit), we went back to one of our old favorites.

I am really very, very sorry to say we wish we hadn't.

The food took an age to arrive (although it was empty apart from another couple) and parts of the same meal were either dried out and burnt or was cold..... not a bad trick to achieve both on the same plate!!

When we politely pointed out the problem with the food to the manageress there was a definate attitude change for the worse. The 'meal' was returned hot but even worse having been through the microwave for a few mins.... It wasn't only the food which left a bad taste !

Having spoke to friends we all tend to have the same feelings about the Dressers Arms and wont be spending our hard earned cash there until they get things sorted our properly. We popped in here last weekend on the off chance having seen the menu boards outside. All I can say is what a difference a few years made since I last went in there.

It is now under new management, (Stuart the ex manager from The Dressers Arms down the road) and all I can say is what a fantasic job he is doing. He even remembered our drinks from 2 years ago. A real Landlord.

Our food was excellent, with ample portions of well cooked homemade food. Nice to see he also uses local suppliers. The prices were fantastic with our 2 main meals for under Â£10. We all said what excellent value it was.

The beer prices were good as were soft drinks for the drivers which is a nice change.

Very impressed and we WILL be back !!

Superb atmosphere with excellent food at very reasonable prices. We visit this pub for a meal at least once a week and the service is always excellent. Rating: 1.00After a nice walk along the canal we came to the Top Lock. As a family we called in to have a drink on a quiet Friday afternoon with a view to eating there also. Our two 4 year olds were stood up but not running around when we were asked by a man in a rugby shirt who I can only assume had sometjing to do with the running of the pub to please keep our children under control and sitting so that they didnt knock into people with drinks.(good job i didnt tell him about the two dogs tied up outside who were possibly obstructing a wooden bench on a freezing cold day!)By the way there were about ten people at the most in the pub. Like Sparky we have visited this pub several times over the years and, while the food hasn't been terrific it was certainly acceptable.
However, we celebrated a birthday there in January 2008 and had the worst eating experience ever. We booked and arrived on time (5pm) and placed our orders by about 5.30. It was going up for 7pm before the first plates arrived. Starters were OK but the mains were abysmall. Stone cold plates and luke warm food that couldn't be faced by any but the most ravenous. One main was about the right amount for a starter ot a small child and was anything but value for money. For the first time in my life I sent mine back as inedible - a so called 'hot sandwich' of fish fillet on brown bloomer which came half cooked on a white teacake straight from the fridge. It was disgusting. Seafood pasta was half cooked with an indescribable water-thin, greasy sauce.
We complained to a staff member who said the waitress had asked if everything was OK - she hadn't - and we'd said it was fine (not so). The excuse for our long wait was that there were lots of other diners to be served. One party arrived long after us but were served before us. Why take bookings if there is no benefit?
