My wife and I went to Cafe Belge,Canterbury for the first time recently and I must say we were not impressed. It was around 8.30/9 pm and not particularly busy, the staff were pleasant enough but when it came to eating, the calamari was not cooked properly, still frozen in places,and that was just for starters. We complained and it was replaced. For the main course I had sea bass with a garlic sauce which was quite nice but my wife ordered a salmon fish cake which seemed to be more potato cake. We decided to leave the food and just enjoy the beer, however we were sitting near the kitchen when the chef came out....lets just say I'm glad we hadn't eaten much. In fact we wouldn't have eaten here at all had we seen him first-his long curly hair was not tied back, his clothing was filthy and he had trouble keeping his trousers up. We were both shocked and disgusted by the fact that he could of been cooking our food. Then to top it all, he sat down in the restaurant and was joined by others, drinking and being very loud and rude. At this point we got the bill and left sharpish. We have since found out that Cafe Belge has a low hygienic score on the door from the council, and to be honest we really are not surprised. We went to this restaurant last Saturday night. At first it is welcoming and had a good atmosphere. Thats about all that can be said on the good side.

Service was painfully slow, not to mention when the food did finally arive it was luke warm at best. It really did leave a bad taste in the mouth though because the next day two members of my family were struck down with severe food poisoning. They both had the same pudding, the fruits of the forest meringue.

I recommend that you stay away unless you want to be bed-ridden for the next week.

The food is lovely the service is very good and quite quick. The people there are really helpful and friendly. Perhaps the best curry house in Canterbury and the local area. Unlike most nice restaurants, the price isn't a rip of. Also there is a lot of selection on the menu, so there is a wide range of spicy and less spicy food, so it fits everyones taste.
A definate must go, for anyone who likes indian food, and a pleasant and relaxed restaurant.The food is lovely the service is very good and quite quick. The people there are really helpful and friendly. Perhaps the best curry house in Canterbury and the local area. Unlike most nice restaurants, the price isn't a rip of. Also there is a lot of selection on the menu, so there is a wide range of spicy and less spicy food, so it fits everyones taste.
A definate must go, for anyone who likes indian food, and a pleasant and relaxed restaurant.

My title agrees with evry1's comment, its the best chinese ive ever eaten at. Try to the Korean fish, thats super duper spicey hot! The staff are so friendly. my grandparents are local customers once a month adn the staff always are friendly to them. But the best thing (when you eat in) is the noodle rests, theyre little blue fishes which were so cool. The owner allowed me to take one home! Best chinese restaurant & b im not even the biggest fan of chinese food. My tummy waits for Korean fish again! :DMy title agrees with evry1's comment, its the best chinese ive ever eaten at. So why did Pieter Boon give it only 3 stars? This is the shining gastronomic star in Canterbury (don't ask me about some of the over-rated others) and always reliable (apart from the Beeton Banquet, an unadvised abberation last month). But when the kitchen is cooking in its comfort zone and the chef is stalking around the market at 1030 am deciding on that day's
menus, you know you are in good hands. Never had a bad (normal) meal, always confident in the cooking, service and wines (the house bottles are excellent).

Indeed, no wheelchair access, bt it is a converted goods shed, after all. And the loos are perfectly sweet and clean, if a bit rustic. And they have proper pull-down roller towels rather than hot air blowers.

All in all, thoroughly recommended - and they have a stack of international awards as testimony. Quite rightly so, IMHO.So why did Pieter Boon give it only 3 stars? Went there hoping for a nice birthday meal for my girlfriend. At first we were very impressed at the speed that we got our table and first courses.

This good first impression soon faded. The food tasted good but all the dishes arrived lukewarm. We had been eating the first dishes for less than a minute when 2 or 3 over eager waiter/waitresses came over trying to snatch our unfinished plates one by one. Even things like the prawn crackers were taken with some left in the dish. I would have thought this would be something to be refilled on request but the waiter never returned with any.

The whole experience was unpleasant and felt rushed. Im sure a buffet style all you can eat chinese would be far better.

At the end of the meal, but when we still had drinks and a couple of picking dishes left, a waitress came and whipped the table cloth off the table and almost immediately returned with the bill!

One of the things that put us off the most was a note on the menu saying that any dishes not eaten would be charged at full price! I have no idea how they could do that.

We were not able to enjoy our meal whatsoever, we felt rushed and like they needed our table quickly for more customers.

I would seriously warn everyone away from this restaurant at all costs.

The curry here can be absolutely great, better than my favourite place, The Ancient Raj, at times. They have a very wide choice, and a lot of vegetarian options too. I have eaten here more times than I can remember. However, be warned that I have had a few dodgy curries - uncooked lumps of potato are not nice, and charcoal style naan did not really make a great side dish.

However, the location is (currently) not so great. The restaurant is very cramped, and you are really packed in! It is clean though, and they are having an extension built, so hopefully it won't be so bad soon.

The place is always rowdy on a friday or saturday night, and so be warned.

I've been here more times than I can remember and it's my favourite curry house in town. I've been to all of the curry houses, and this offers the best experience.

The staff are really nice guys, and will let you order off the menu usually. The atmosphere is great, you aren't packed in like at the Kashmir, and they have live music on fridays and saturdays.

The curry is very nice, excellent the large majority of the time and always served quickly and very politely.

After you've had your curry, they have a lounge upstairs (the curry house is located in a lovely old building) where you can have tea or spirits.

Rating: 1.00Disappointing. There are so many other nice, more interesting and cheaper places to eat. It's just not worth bothering with especially if like me you don't like your food too hot as even the mild things on the menu are big on chilli and low in flavour.
On the plus side the staff can be pleasingly absent minded about charging for drinks and an ordering cock-up was resolved in our favour.Disappointing. There are so many other nice, more interesting and cheaper places to eat. Until eating in this particular location I had only ever tried Wagamama in London. The Canterbury experience is "the same, but different"!

The restaurant is set in one big room with rows of canteen style tables - you rarely get to sit on your own as tables are always full. There is a handy "shelf" under the table to put small bags - in this restaurant it helps if you get a table next to the window as there is space to put shopping/coats etc. There is a coat rack at the back but it is a "leave at your own risk" affair.

The kitchen runs along the back of the restaurant and you can see food being prepared freshly.

The menu is the same as others in the chain - noodles and rice dishes with various extras. I have been amused to see that knives and forks seem to be added to the tables without being asked for here. I have only ever seen people use chopsticks or the wooden soup ladels in London - a nice provincial touch!

For me this is a reliable restaurant with consistently good food and fast, pleasant service. There is one item which they need to work on - but that's me being picky! I like their gyoza (mini pasty type side order) but in this restaurant the "pastry" always seem raw in the centre but burnt on the outside. If you live in Canterbury or are just visting you need to try out not only cafe des amis du mexique but also their other establishment cafe maureque......(try the cakes they are delicious!!!) Myself and my friends and family all love this place loads.

You will always receive brilliant service, a great atmosphere and most importantly terrific food......i would say you should try the fajhitas which i suppose is quite normal for people going to a mexican...but honestly they just taste sooooooo good!!! but also tapas is gorgeous.... and you have to try their truffles....gorgeous!!!!

They do some great special offers, and its just a great place - try it out.

Zizzis is a yummy italian restaurant on Canterbury high street.

They have a good menu with lots of yummy meals my favouite being their ravoli, its is gorgeous!!!!!!

I went in recently and also tried their new dessert , well i think its new as i had never sen it previous visit ... its a bread and butter pudding type thing can not rememeber its name but its devine!!!! but that is nothing to the icecream its served with, it has a nutmegg sort of taste to it, so nice!!!!

I think considering the standard of the food and the service the price of the food is quite competetive.

I agree with the other reviews in the fact its definatly what you would expect from an ask restaurant, its a good standard of food, my family love the pizzas and pasta.

I have gave it an extra star though as i find the staff very good, i have been there numerous times and everytime i have had consistendly good service, very polite and courteous, constantly checking to make sure our table was happy and on the last visit they actually were like entertainment for the kids.... one of the waitresses kept pulling faces and having a joke with my neice..... she actually did not want to leave in the end .... she thought she had made a new best friend bless her.

Went here for lunch today for their "Fusions" or Lunch special - 1 starter, 1 main dish and a bread or rice for £6, which sounded on paper like a good deal. It was even advertised in their window, the only small print being that it only applied between 12pm and 2:30pm, which wasn't a problem as we arrived very shortly after 12. We went because my friend had been the previous week, had the deal and thought it was quite nice and pretty good value.

We were seated reasonably quickly (no one else was there, so the service should have been this good or better), and given the menu. My friend and I had a couple of drinks each and picked out a starter each, a main each and a naan bread each, thus qualifying for the deal. The food was ok. Not brilliant, not nearly as good as my favourite curry house (and the one I usually visit). I was rather annoyed that my Korma came with almonds sprinkled over the top, despite it not saying in the menu that the dish contained nuts, as I have an intolerance to them that makes me sick if I eat them. I have to admit I took a guess in ordering the Korma - I can eat it most places and their menu was very unclear as to which dishes had nuts and which didn't.

We finished up and asked for the bill which came quickly. We were frankly shocked at the amount - in the region of £40. My companion was treating me, so he went to query the bill with one of the waiting staff, in another room next to (behind) the dining area. Such was the volume with which the conversation ended up occurring at that I heard every word that was said, and I was actually frightened by the speed with which the waiting staff member escalated from reasonable to aggressive (he became aggressive almost as soon as my friend queried the bill with him).

My friend mentioned that he expected the offer to have been applied, as it had been the previous week when he had been with someone else. No one had mentioned the offer but as they'd ordered the items mentioned in it, it had been automatically applied. The member of staff said that we had had main portions, not offer portions so he wouldn't apply it retrospectively. My friend said as it was lunchtime the offer should have been mentioned when we came in and set down, especially if a separate menu applied. The staff member continued to shout and say it wasn't his job to tell us about offers, just to write down the food we ordered. Then he started to shout about how long he'd lived in the UK and made out that we were trying to take advantage of him. My friend ended up just paying the bill so we could go.

As we left we could still hear the member of staff shouting about us to another member of staff.

To be quite frank I found the situation frightening. I would stress to other people reading this not to go. There are nicer, cheaper and friendlier curry houses in Canterbury (I particularly recommend the Ancient Raj [reviewed on this site here: http://trustedplaces.com/review/uk/canterbury/restaurant/1l42w7h/the-ancient-raj ]).

The only reason I gave this appalling service 1 star is because 0 stars is not an option.

To sum up:
* Despite the restaurant being empty apart from my companion and I the service was not amazing.
* The menu was unclear what ingredients that people may not be able to eat was in their food.
* The food was not amazing (and for the prices they charged it should have been).
* The bill was astronomical, the offer not applied, and when the bill was queried the member of staff questioned got very aggressive very quickly and was still shouting about us to another member of staff when we left.

Then he started to shout about how long he'd lived in the UK and made out that we were trying to take advantage of him. My friend ended up just paying the bill so we could go.

As we left we could still hear the member of staff shouting about us to another member of staff.

To be quite frank I found the situation frightening. I would stress to other people reading this not to go. There are nicer, cheaper and friendlier curry houses in Canterbury (I particularly recommend the Ancient Raj [reviewed on this site here: http://trustedplaces.com/review/uk/canterbury/restaurant/1l42w7h/the-ancient-raj ]).

The only reason I gave this appalling service 1 star is because 0 stars is not an option.

To sum up:
* Despite the restaurant being empty apart from my companion and I the service was not amazing.
* The menu was unclear what ingredients that people may not be able to eat was in their food.
* The food was not amazing (and for the prices they charged it should have been).
* The bill was astronomical, the offer not applied, and when the bill was queried the member of staff questioned got very aggressive very quickly and was still shouting about us to another member of staff when we left.
* The same member of staff said it was not his job to mention offers and the onus was on us to mention it in order to get it (despite this not being the case the previous week when friend went for the lunch offer - noone mentioned it and it was just applied to the bill as a matter of course)

To go on the row boat tour of the Stour River, you have to go through this ancient restaurant. It says 1500 on it's door, but it was actually built in 1495.

After the boat ride, as we had eye-balled the delicious looking and smelling meals of the other patrons there, we sat down and had a scrumptious meal.

Food, service, wine and ambiance (being alongside the river Stour) were all brilliant! Only downside was 'the usual problem'... only one loo for the ladies and a queue... so I ventured into the mens...

We enjoyed the lamb and steak cutlets very much. They had a lovely new potato and broccoli side to it. My sister opted for the seafood dish... we were all very sated with our meals.

The red wine was delicious too! (it was from South Africa, so this wasn't a surprise) ;)
