Really good coffee here, and great sandwiches and cakes. All the stuff is Fairtrade, if you worry about that sort of thing! Staff are all friendly and cheerful, and the location is really cool - King's Parade, next door to all the big colleges.Really good coffee here, and great sandwiches and cakes. I took my group to visit this wonderful tea garden during a day trip to Cambridge and they were delighted by it.

You can easily walk all the way to the village of Grantchester from Cambridge - it's only a couple of miles along the banks of the pretty river Granta.

Expect to see lots of students punting up the river at a happy walking pace beside you with picnics on board (a punt is a special Cambridge boat).

Anyway, after your walk you'll be ready for a Perfect with a capital 'P' English tea at the Orchard. And the thing is, it really is an orchard! You collect a tray with classic cakes or cream tea and stretch out in deckchairs amongst ancient gnarled apple trees and have a lovely happy time.

Cafe Carrington is a little gem of a place tucked down a flight of stairs next to Crabtree and Evelyn. It is very popular so there may be a queue and it's a little cramped, but it's worth the wait. The food is wholesome, fresh and appetising - walk quickly past the cakes and sandwiches (don't worry, you can come back later) and you will find a fantastic spread of home-baked quiches, pies, lasagnes, macaroni cheese, soups and salads. The baked potatoes are worth a mention too - toppings are generous and you'd better tell the staff if you don't want butter! Toasted sandwiches can be cooked to order, as can chips and kids' meals. This coffee shop is a little gem tucked away in the Baptist Church, near the Arts Picturehouse. It has a very traditional feel to it and serves soup, sandwiches, baked potatoes and the usual tearoom fare such as scones, cakes and the most delicious toasted teacakes with lashings of butter. Food is wholesome, reaonable priced and home-made. The clientele is varied - it has a tranquil feel so is popular with shoppers looking for a respite from the bustle of town, but also provides admirably for young families with a play corner, high chairs and excellent baby changing facilities. If you don't enjoy the company of small children (bah) it's best to avoid Fridays around noon, when the splendid mother and toddler group run by the Baptist Church ends, and several families stay for lunch. I spent a fair bit of time in Starbucks just recently as had several hours to kill over two days and it just happened to be dry (weather was shocking) and nearby! The service was efficient and friendly, they managed to cope with a broken dishwasher on the second day so I had a paper cup rather than china which I can live with.

The food at Starbucks is obviously pretty uniform across the company but I must say their skinny peach and raspberry muffin is lush!! I'd love to know how many calories are in it as it's way too nice to be very low.

What really spoilt my visit to this branch was the toilet. It was foul, very unclean and frankly left me retching. There was a lot of paper lying around and it just did not look like it had been checked for quite a while. Excellent little cafe - all the cakes are home-made and completely delish as are all the other tasty snackettes on offer + they roast their own coffee. Very crowded and slightly too expensive, however, a pretty, traditional, cost tea room that not only serves a ncie cup of tea and slice of cake, but also does great jacket potatoes and sandwiches. Staff wear maids outfits which adds to the sense of occasion and makes tea time fun if a bit twee. Aunties is not really a good place for a quite cup of tea but more a traditional afternoon tea experience.
