I really liked The Castle, but I wasn't too keen on the prices. The cider was gorgeous and the staff were really friendly, but being used to Newcastle prices, I thought paying over Â£3 for a pint was rather excessive! However, the pub was lovely and the beer garden even nicer - the weather was boiling and it was lovely to sit outside with a cold pint in hand. The food at The Castle is also very nice - the fish burger especially. The pub was very very busy at about 6pm on a Thursday night, with people finishing work and popping in for a drink and a bite to eat.I really liked The Castle, but I wasn't too keen on the prices. I visited The Mitre with a couple of friends whilst on holiday in Cambridge in July, and I've got to say that I wasn't unimpressed. The pub was pleasant, both inside and out, and served a wide and delicious range of food. I even bought a jar of chutney to take home with me! The chicken pie was gorgeous, as was the platter that my companions ordered. The price of a pint of cider was very reasonable for Cambridge, as we found the majority of pubs very, very expensive. Good thing about this place is its pretty low key, it is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Usually a good selection of wines and beers, food is pretty good here, shame the seats arn't so comfortable, but its not somewhere you usually stay all night, a good place to have a few drinks (with no screaming children at weekends too) kick back and relax for a bit and then move on, or go home, depending on what night it is!Good thing about this place is its pretty low key, it is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Don't go here unless your in the vicinity and desperate for the toilet, even then you'll have a long wait and most likely there will be no toilet paper or soap, nor will the hand dryers work and there will be throngs of girlls dressed in next to nothing screaming and shouting as you make your way in to the ladies,.....nice.
As for the atmosphere in the pub, there is none, more atmosphere in the toilets, if thats your thang.
Drink, well if you can get served at some point in the next century, is pretty average, cheap and average, if thats your thing. I always wonder if anyone gets sick from drinking the beer that they sell as it is close to the sell by date (thats why its so cheap). As for the meat market dance floor and the food, i'd rather eat in macdonalds, really i would, at least its cheaper and you know what you will get.

The Snug Bar is a small and cosy place but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character and atmosphere! The staff are always friendly and welcoming whilst maintaining just the right level of efficiency and professionalism. The clientÃ¨le is a very diverse mix of trendy young professionals, tourists, local more mature singles, couples and groups and a few students. I cannot imagine anyone would feel out of place on coming here. It has a lively yet relaxed feel and you can enjoy a wide range of cocktails including non-alcoholic drinks and freshly made smoothies (yummuy)! The food is always freshly cooked and delicious... I was deleighted the first time I ordered a chicken burger, expecting one of the usual dreary processed discs covered in breadcrumbs, only to find it was a whole chicken breast covered in bacon, brie and cranberry sauce complete with home cooked fat chips and a side salad.

Most of the time there is pleasant piped music but they do have live music on some evenings and a huge screen for special matches that is occasionally brought out. I have dined at the robin hood and little john for the past 10 years (having been taken there by my parents as a child and continuing to go as an adult) and have only ever found one fault!
I always find that the wait for your meal is longer than average, I know it is nice to think it means your meal is freshly prepared from scratch, but I think it is more down to lack of staffing than that! So I would definitely order a starter if you are very hungry when you get there!

The restaurant itself is delightful, very well maintained with attractive decor. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is always delicious and well priced. The castle used to be a very nice pub, with a great atmosphere. But they have recently refurbished it, and tried to make it trendy and cool, and it just does not work in my opinion. They have put lots of comfortable sofas in, and although they are nice, it has lost the feel of a quality pub and is more like a trendy wine bar now. They have waiter service, but the food is too expensive, not enough choice, and not espcecially worth it when it arrives. Why did they change it? They should have left it as it was. Now I do not bother going in there any more. Avoid and go to nicer pubs in the area.The castle used to be a very nice pub, with a great atmosphere. The Maypole is an excellent family run pub (by the same family for over 20 years)hidden away in the back streets of Cambridge. It carries an excellent selection of beers and real ales but is best known for its fantastic cocktails. The food is homemade(and tastes it)and the service is excellent - happy friendly staff who will do whatever they can to make your visit an enjoyable one.The Maypole is an excellent family run pub (by the same family for over 20 years)hidden away in the back streets of Cambridge. It carries an excellent selection of beers and real ales but is best known for its fantastic cocktails. The food is homemade(and tastes it)and the service is excellent - happy friendly staff who will do whatever they can to make your visit an enjoyable one.

The Champion of the Thames is the pub that all pubs want to be when they grow up. Small, dark, and full of genial men in beards and sandals, it serves excellent beer to a wide range of punters and also eggs. And veg, on a Sunday. Once every couple of months there is, bizarrely, the occasional cooking contest - most recently chocolate cake - and the pub now has its own facebook group, despite being largely populated by regulars who look like they wouldn't recognise a computer if it trotted up and barked at them. Presided over by the lovely Catherine (who used to be in training to be a methodist minister) and her rather more rounded husband Lawrence (who used to be a bookie), the Champ is much loved by its many regulars, and it is the ultimate regulars pub. It no longer serves food, except for the various clubs that base themselves at the pub, but the landlord has been known to send out for an entire three course meal from the Turkish restaurant down the road. If a touch of the quintisential English pub is your scene then The Eagle has it in buckets. There's several bars that act as the 'main' serving areas and a stack full of history to get through as you sample the good ol 'tradtional' english ales alongside.

With several rooms to choose from the best, by far, is the 'flying room' - with the graffiti'd ceiling from the flight boys of the World Wars who signed their names on the ceiling and painted in red lipstick a murial of the then lady land owner. If you squint and look upwards you can just about make out the cigarette that is in her hand amongst the host of signatures of the various flight crews that surround her.

The Eagle also offers a marvellous selection of good ol English pub grub, think pies, chips and vegetables and you can't go far wrong.

The clientel are a nice mix of tourist (inevitable in Cambridge), students (also inevitable) and local yocal - always a great indicator of a quality drinking establishment!

So pour the ale , order a pie, chips and vegetables and enjoy gazing upwards and trying to identify the various insignia of the flight crew and lipsticked illustration of years gone by. No trip Cambridge would be complete without a visit to The Eagle.
