The other reviews must have stayed somewhere else! Lamppost Villa in Bath is one of the best B&B's I have stayed in.; I travel a lot and spend 200 nights a year in B&B's, the owner does not have any young children and is a charming and delightful host; the breakfast was definitely first class; I think the reviews on www.lamppostvilla.com reflect more accurately the welcome and comfort you will receive.The other reviews must have stayed somewhere else! After struggling to find any restaurants in Bath on a Sunday night at 7pm that looked busy, we came across Tilleys Bistro and had a look at the menu. Poking our head inside the restaurant, there appeared to be a few people so we though we would give the restaurant a try. Walking into the small and drab upstairs restaurant we almost decided to leave but decided to stay - how I wished we had left and gone to McDonalds, KFC, a greasy spoon - anywhere but Tilleys Bistro.

After being led downstairs it became apparent that this place was stuck in the past and would fit nicely into the genre of 'rubbish restaurant circa 1979'. Why there is a random scattering of Chelsea paraphernalia, I have no idea, and the framed old Chelsea tickets are beyond naff. As for the dust covered frogs everywhere, your guess is as good as mine. We were seated by a relatively pleasant, but slightly fearful looking girl. The source of her apparent fear soon became clear when a stompy, matronly Battleaxe (who I can only assume was one of the owners) regularly criticised her loudly in front of customers. We could certainly hear every admonishment. We ordered a starter to share which on the menu was an assortment of smoked salmon, smoked eel and poached salmon with coriander and lemon mayonnaise. We were informed by the Battleaxe that there was no smoked eel so this would be replaced by smoked mackerel. When the dish arrived it was tiny. Recognising that it was a starter for one person that was being shared, we had barely a small mouthful of each fish. At Â£8.50 this was extremely overpriced. We also ordered some 'French bread' which was a few pieces of baguette which was fine, and a dry end of a brown sandwich loaf. We were dreading our main courses and it turned out, rightly so. I ordered Cassoulet and a side-salad. The Cassoulet was tiny, under seasoned and had horrid chunks of fried bread on top. The side-salad was bland, limp and un-dressed. We also shared spaghetti with chicken livers and pesto. No spoon was forthcoming and the dish was summed up as 'uninspiring'.

The bill was Â£54 which was beyond expensive for horrible food and small portions. We regularly eat out in a variety of restaurants all over the country and Tilleys Bistro is by far the worse. I think our experience was summed up when we paid the bill and Battleaxe asked us whether we enjoyed our meal. When telling, very politely, a fraction of dissatisfaction especially about the portion size of our starter she snapped back, 'well, fish is expensive you know, what do you expect?' or something equally unacceptable. Why ask for feedback if you don't want to receive it? I am stunned that this place is in business. This must have been the worst soup we have ever consumed. We had Carrot and Coriander Soup and Mushroom. We are not sure if there was much evidence of a carrot or mushroom -it was the most watery soup I have ever seen. I pointed this out to the manager who told me this is how it comes in the catering packs. I find this odd, as it is a reputable brand found in supermarkets which I have bought on one or two occasions and it was vastly superior to this!This must have been the worst soup we have ever consumed. I found myself thoughly dissapointed in the complete lack of service and the poor excuse for food that was presented to me. The waiter spent his time reorganising empty tables and ignoring his customers; when you finally managed to get his attention he was cold, bordering rude. I was hoping that the food would make up for the lack of service and was happily surprised when it arrived within minutes of ordering- this was short lived as I feel that this was most likely down to the fact that my food was fresh from the microwave; in fact I have had better microwave meals from a standard supermarket!! Not a good experience and not one I would repeat. The place looks pretty swanky but that is it. The service was on the low side of indifferent and overly keen to refill glasses (=sell more wine) and the food was very, very average indeed. This little tapas bar in Bartlett Street is an absolute find. Just off the beaten track,but well worth looking for. The front of house staff are so pleasant and helpful. And the food is a dream. We have had breakfast, lunch and dinner there now and have enjoyed every mouthful. The menu changes frequently so always something new to try. Have seen toddlers, middle aged, old aged all enjoying the food and character of this little gem.
Sadly I don't get to Bath as much as I would like, but always find time for Same Same But Different. Pzazz is amazing. It's the only takeaway I've had where you savour every mouthful, dispose of the green packaging and go away feeling you've eaten a healthy meal! I'm going through the menu at the moment, and my fave so far has to be the slammer- cold lamb and chilli jelly. Oh Yumm!Pzazz is amazing. Family run restaurant hidden beneath South Parade, great service and fabulous fish. This has got to be the best place in Bath for fish, beats Loch Fyne & Fishworks hands down. The chef has a real flair for Thai style sauces which complement the delicate flavour of the fish. Same same has to be one of the best restaurants in Bath. Superb quality of ingredients, superb ideas, masterful execution. We visit Same Same for breakfast and dinner and so far is superb. Service is top class and atmosphere cosy and friendly. It is just a shame that is hidden away from all the lights that are gathered around Jamie Oliver's restaurant a few metres away. Firstly, this place is called 'Arabesque', not 'Lebanese Restaurant'. That aside, I highly recommend it if you wanted to try something different. The place is very small and intimate with lots of soft lighting, the food is lovely and the service is great. Unlike a lot of cheaper restaurants in Bath, the dessert menu is also made on the premises. Provided you can accustom yourself to the taste of rosewater, there is lots on the dessert menu to enjoy too. A lovely little restaurant for you to take your partner for an inexpensive, intimate meal.Firstly, this place is called 'Arabesque', not 'Lebanese Restaurant'. As the title says, this is pretty much a churn and burn noodle bar with a distinctly un-Western bent. It also seems to want to tick the health conscious ethos of modern british cuisine, hence the soba noodles (one of the main parts of its business) were extremely dry and cloying as opposed to oily, moist and soft. Neither the waiting staff nor the chefs were of Eastern descent when I was last there and it seems that they were given a couple of weeks training and left to their own devices after that. Churn and burn. The staff also have very little idea of the culture behind their food - I once asked if they served if they served sashimi, only to be asked if it was a type of pepper. When I first moved to Bath, there were no Japanese restaurants at all (The Sushi Guy in Sawclose had recently closed down) so I felt somewhat despondent. Imagine my relief when Yen Sushi opened its doors and filled that gap. Thankfully, my initially enthusiasm was met with equally good food and a very friendly atmosphere. Some may feel a bit put out by the lack of service (it is conveyor belt-based and booking a table in advance seems to make no difference) but provided you are prepared for this you should have fun. My one major gripe with Yen Sushi is the music: playing western R'n'B in a Japanese restaurant is a complete anachronism and conflicts with the authenticity of the atmosphere they try to evoke. Some J-Pop would be far more appropriate for the 'Urban East' setting. We came here as part of our work Christmas meal and my experience comes as a complete contrast to the other reviews on this site. Perhaps we picked a bad night but the food simply tasted of nothing. Nothing. Considering the spiciness of Indian cuisine, this is quite a feat. Not only did my massala taste of nothing, I tried the daal which tasted equally of nothing and my keema nan seemed to have no meat in it at all. Strangely enough, it also tasted of nothing. They also miscalculated the bill and tried to overcharge us. If you wanted a quiet, intimate and romantic restaurant, this may not be the restaurant for you. However, if you wanted a non-pretentious restaurant, with lots of good food, a decent price and you wanted to walk away feeling full and satisfied, you are in for a treat. Whether you pop in for a take-away or book a table, this is easily the best Turkish restaurant in Bath. The portions are generous and all food is made on the premises (including, so I am led to believe, the doner meat). The dessert menu is also impressive. It may be worth noting that there is definite meat-bias to Turkish cuisine, so vegetarians may want to investigate further before booking a table. The food and service were unfortunately very average: the wait for our main meal took over 40 minutes and they misunderstood our orders repeatedly (coconut/lemongrass rice became plain rice and an orange juice became a double Tia Maria). That said, that food quality was good but it may be worth avoiding the dessert menu - everything was pre-made, packaged food that was clearly not made on the premises. I was particularly disappointed with my 'caramel parfait' that was described with mouth-watering adjectives only to be served with what looked like a plain, round choc ice! On the 21.03.09 I got ripped off £90.00 deposit because.... the owner said that "I didn't eat enough food for him to make any money" he kept my deposit + drinks Money + he got agressive when we didn't want to pay for the food (£76.00) We Had to Pay !! PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE

I am quite surprised to see the other reviews for this restaurant. I have visited Bath twice in the last few months and each time have dined at the Thai Balcony. Admittedly, the entrance to the restaurant leaves something to be desired, but once inside the decor is beautiful.

Each visit has been truly excellent - service was second to none. The staff were attentive without being overbearing and were very friendly.

The food was out of this world. The sirloin steak was beautifully cooked as was the chicken. Everything was tasty without being too spicy.

The wine is also excellent.

A great little find!I am quite surprised to see the other reviews for this restaurant. I have visited Bath twice in the last few months and each time have dined at the Thai Balcony. Admittedly, the entrance to the restaurant leaves something to be desired, but once inside the decor is beautiful.

Each visit has been truly excellent - service was second to none. The staff were attentive without being overbearing and were very friendly.
