This is my second venture into Korean food. The first was a small Manhattan dumpling restaurant. The second was Kum Gang San in Flushing NY.
After we ordered our appetizers and main entrees, the staff started bringing small plates of different vegetables and small dried fish, sauces, Kimchee, Squid, tofu, and a sweet yogurt sauce. 15 plates in all! Then came the food. WOW!
For appetizers we had Hae Mul Pa Jun, Korean style crispy rice flour pancake made with finely chopped assortment of sea food and scallions. Excellent. We also had Man Do Gui,pan-fried vegetable or beef dumplings.
I had Yook Hwe Bibim Bap, Raw marinated beef strips, on top of steamed rice and assorted raw vegetables. The meat was delicately seasoned and the vegetables provided a fresh, light contrast to the meat. I was a bit surprised at the raw egg yolk on top, but I mixed it all in and was pleasantly surprised by the mingling of flavors.
My son had Cod roe soup. Made with whole roe sacks, assorted veggies and a delicious fish broth. The fish roe had a pleasant flavor (not fishy) but the texture was grainy, like sand. A texture that takes some getting used to. The service was friendly and staff took the time to explain all of the side dishes.
Dinner for two cost $53……stuffed to the gills.
