Cafe Rouge is a chain of Brasserie-style restaurants serving a range of light meals and drinks within a French atmosphere. There is a large choice of dishes as well as hot and cold drinks which makes this restaurant a good stop off point for tea and snacks rather than grand dinners. They can cater for private parties of up to 100 people.

Reviews for Cafe Rouge

Red as a colour usually stands for 'danger', 'do not go' or 'alert'. In this case it should refer to all of the above. Sad to say back in my undergraduate hay days I used to work at two of these establishments. Aside from how hard they over work their staff (a LOT), what can at best be described as 'food' is also over-worked. Soggy 'french' fries, the best seller a 'croque monsieur' is a glorified ham sandwich between two bits of dry ciabatta and heated up in order to melt the cheese to disguise the rather revolting fusing together of 'flavours'.

Basically (and it is very basic 'cuisine', i can't even bring myself to say 'french') what you see is what you get. If your idea of fine dining is overcooked hot sandwiches and over-priced wine amid a red themed 'cafe styled' setting then le rouge could be the place for you. If, however, you value your taste buds and channel new flavours then Cafe Rouge should be taken as its literal translation: Cafe Red (alert): uninspiring, unenticing and disappointing.

if you go, tip well, their staff could do with it! Otherwise walk on by. In York there's an established busker outside so if the risk of falling into Cafe Rouge doesn't encourage a swift exit his singing should make you hurry on by.

Ok its Cafe Rouge - safe chain stuff that little of which is produced or cooked (other than heated up) locally. Means you know what you are going to get - blandness. However, York is dominated by such corporate outlets.
Can be one of the cities more annoying buskers playing outside.
