Reviews for Mirchiz

If only there were other places like this but Mirchiz trully is unique in it's own perfect right. Bravo bravo bravo!

First off: I am not a curry person. But my friends are. So every once in a while, I get dragged out for curry in a large group. I usually fill up on rice and garlic naan, and smile my way though eating enough actual curry to make it look like my plate isn't still full.

Except at Mirchiz. Following my first tentative taste, I immediately began gobbling every savory bite I could get my fork into, and the few morsels left on my plate at the end were due to my full and contented stomach being at maximum capacity, not for lack of wanting to finish. I enjoyed the meal immensely, and judging by their cleared plates, I believe my dining companions did too.

As for service, we managed to get a table for 14 on an hour's notice on a Wednesday night. Once in the restaurant, orders were taken promptly but food took ages; to be fair though, we were a large group. Still, we had to ask twice for water, and after a jug of it was brought, we had to flag the server down again to ask for glasses as well.

Previous commenters have remarked on large amounts of potatoes in the veggie dishes - this appears to have been remedied. My dish was a well-balanced combination of carrots, courgettes, cauliflower, broccoli, baby corn, mange tout and a reasonable amount of potato.

Pricing is spectacular. With appetizers, mains and side dishes, we still ended up paying only £10 each, which I felt was more than reasonable as we were stuffed to the gills and fully satisfied.

I will definitely be frequenting this restaurant again.

oh no, the quality is dropping. The word has got out about how wonderful and great value Mirchiz's is, AND combine this on one of their Thursday special curry nights the place is packed.

Mirchiz's simply does not have the capacity to deal with its popularity.

Suddenly dishes are slap, dash, with too much oil and sauce and not enough quality ingredients. Potatoes alone do NOT make a 'vegetable curry'.

My advice, go on a quieter night. AND/OR order a take away with request to remove the potatoes, then youll be assured a better quality feast!

Go Mirchiz's get some more cooks in the kitchen!

Mirchiz value our customers comments seriously and will be looking into employing additional staff. We apologise for the temporary poor standard and promise reoccurence of this nature does not happen again.

We are looking into moving to a new premises in the near future and will keep our customers posted on this progress.

Trouble is.... sometimes place become too popular so the quality drops. Mirchiz is clearly running to capacitywhich means the quality or the food is suffering - I'd like to see the kitchen - but my last visit had veg curry OK but too many big potatoes and I suspect the same sauce is used across many dishes. Still cheap but I'd pay more for better....

I ended up at the Mirchiz on my other half's work night out recently and we were both really impressed. Not really knowing where we were heading, we walked past the Bingo to a lovely little row of shops and there found the rest of our gang waiting outside the Mirchiz.

Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed the food. The menu was really extensive (with plenty of veggie choice). We had loads of starters to share and so many varieties of curries, rice and naan between us that the tables were heaving under the strain! The Chicken Bhuna and Chicken Tikka Rogan Josh were particularly well liked, but I have to warn you that the garlic naan was the garlickiest I have ever tasted! (Not a bad thing at the time, but not so great next morning!)

The Mirchiz doesn't serve alcohol, so a willing volunteer hot-footed it to the nice looking wine shop next door.

All in, for a raft of starters, mains, sides and a share of the off license haul it came to £15 a head!

It is really cosy (ok small) inside, which was magnified by our party of ten taking up most of the room! So I would definitely recommend booking.

Excellent food, excellent price, excellent service: I would thoroughly recommend the Mirchiz.

We stumbled across this place on a night out in a while ago, and well, it was a really great find. The food was simply amazing, and I have to say the chicken tikka biryani was one of the best i have had anywhere. We were there in the evening, but I also noticed that they do some really good lunch time offers as well, although i can't remember off the top of my head what they were. Saying that, they probably did not apply at the weekends. Anyway, I am rambling. As I said, the food was great, and the prices were pretty good as well. Easily give it eight out of ten I think.

Mirchiz, used to be Cafe Masala. Now it is updated with a new menu and restaurant interia. thankfully this little Indian gem has kept the super friendly staff, very reasonable prices but with a new menu overhaul that verges on the damn right decadent.

A friend of a friend an Indian Restaurant food critic from London town came to stay, and his reaction was that Mirchiz is as good (and a hell of a lot more reasonable) than some of the top Indian restaurants in the city. Praise indeed.

Last night (a Saturday) as a party of three we ordered curry at prime rush hour oclock. within the hour, a nippy 57 mintues delivered to my door was a sumptuous feast that had bellies full and very satisfied. The highlights from the new menu are the Coley Massala; a marinated pan fried coley fish with massala sauce, Bhindi prawn with okra and Mirchiz king prawn special; cooked tikka style and with a 'special' sauce. Well the sauce was divine, so much so that this was the dipping dish of choice for our bhajis and popadoms.

I love Cafe Masala. But I am so pleased it has had an update and is now even better. I'm going back soon, not least as on 'Special' Thursday night you can eat in for only £7.95 per head. Cheap as chips. Thankfully without the chips.

:-)

Under new management Mirchiz is not only excellent food but very well priced. What you do is a) book as word is out about this place - especially at weekends and b) buy some beer/wine from the excellent little 'beer and cheese' shop just round the corner. They open your purchases for you and there is no extra charge.
Great vegetarian selection.
Downside ? Well this is not atmospheric and given the demand you may not be encouraged to hang around once you have finished.
A good take away service and they deliver - but allow time.

Wandering around York its easy to get distracted by the little 'cute' streets, tea rooms (betty's is the best btw) and more pubs than days of the year. But step outside the city walls and head toward Fulford and you come across this little gem - Cafe Masala.

Everything is made fresh here, if you want the menu (extensive) tweaked e.g. hotter, cooler etc the chef is more than happy to oblige. And what with these being fresh ingredients and cooking there is not the usual line of oil that drips over so many an Indian meal. Think of this more as a fusion of flavours, so fresh, so Eastern that hang on a second is that the Taj Mahal outside the window?.. oh no there's another viking we must still be in York Toto. But you would be forgiven for setting into daydream mode with flavours as impressive as those at Cafe Masala.

Sadly the venue does rather let this place down. It is small, but that is not its main draw back as small is intimate and fun and thats how India food should be enjoyed! Rather it is the lacklustre setting, that if you are one of a couple dining is less intimate more claustrophobic and yet at the same time stark. If you are not hemmed in together, then the place can feel empty.

Thankfully though Cafe Masala do offer a great Take Away service. So my advice is take away and indulge in authentic Indian cuisine that will have you venturing outside of the walls of York again and again.

The 'best of' on the menu: onion bhaghi's, try the mushroom one's too, lentil dahl, and special Sabzi Masala. Fabulous.

Their fresh lime and condiments are a treat too!
