Buzz serve a variety of Japanese dishes in their formal restaurant as well as from their sushi conveyor belt.

Reviews for Buzz

Sadly this restaurant now seems to have closed. I'm putting this message on to stop anyone wasting a journey to go visit, like I had tonight.

I say sadly, because there's now very few places in York for sushi and I am a sushiholic. There's now only Pret a manger, if you can even call their sushi sushi. With branches in Parliamant street and one at the Designer outlet.

Then there's Asia Gourmet on Gillygate. I've only had sushi once there and can't remember it very well, but it could be worth trying.

Indochine is good for other Japanese food + Korean, Chinese, Malay and I'm going to write suggesting they start doing sushi too, now there's a gap in the market.

FWIW, I'm not that surprised Buzz closed down. They had quite a big restaurant so rents were probably quite high and the food standard wasn't really there. Sure it was OK but the menu never appealed to me that much and the sushi I did have there never stood out. I even prefer Yo Sushi to there and I think if they had better footfall and a smaller place with a conveyor belt and cheaper prices it could have worked.

On the plus points, the interior was nice and the staff seemed good too.

I don't know why I'm writing a review of a closed restaurant lol...

Edit 19/11/2009 - This restaurant seems to be re-opening named as Tokyo Joe. Hopefully it will be a big improvement. I will visit and add a review when it's open.

here is a restaurant that has a good idea... fresh japanese food in a city that is very limited with similar concepts. However, what Buzz offers is not so fresh 'food', with en-masse and very laissez-faire affiliation to actual sushi.

Having been to Tokyo, lived and experienced the real deal, Buzz doesn't come close. The mixed shared platter appears as a 'best of rice' dish that someone had the afterthought to add 'some fish' to in order that it at least resebles something like sushi.

The noddle soup is OK, but nothing special.

In short bland, boring and best described as no-shi, as in no sushi.

What's the issue mazphd, you've posted this numerous times in other places and twice here, why? Do you work for one of their competitors?

I've visited the pace regularly and have spent time in Japan and give this place a thumbs up. Two Japanese friends working there also give the thumbs up (yes I'm biased).

Anyone that tried to serve utterly authentic Japanese food in York would live a lonely life as a poor individual.

PHD possibly, get into the real world.

No 'issue' holyroller, i simply love my food fresh and with quality. BuzzBar has so much potential, i hope that they can push out some decent sashimi soon! :-)

And I look forward to reading some reviews from you too! Get writing! York's a great place to find eats!

Has Buzz closed down?

holyroller, best to read back through mazphd previous reviews, she just speaks as she finds. If she infers in some way that a place is not that good - it's usually rubbish.

I think the Buzz has gone... The bar is no more..

ps Thanks @Wheely

Having read the most recent review of the Buzz bar in York from May 09 I feel the need to comment on visits to the restaurant both past and present. I have never had a meal at Buzz that I would rate less than perfect. Being a vegetarian I have to say I am glad to report that I have never been served a Tempura containing carrots, button mushrooms or broccoli, so I am I am little confused as to where the reviewer actually ate on their evening out!

Seriously, I have been a fan of the Buzz bar since it opened its doors (over 6 years ago) and have always been greeted by friendly staff (including management), and served exceptional food at very competitive prices; especially in York.

Having been a loyal customer at Buzz for many years I urge anybody reading this review to try it for themselves. The people writing the latest review must have had a disappointing experience but I assure you , it was not at the Buzz bar in York!

the food was too greasy and the tempura batter was raw and runny! it costs £5.95 for a tempura veg dish. when it came out there was 1 slice of carrot, half a button mushroom and a small piece of broccoli! i could hardly believe it! i said quietly to the manager that it wasnt great and he just laughed in my face and said that if ive ordered it then i have to pay for it! it is the first time in my life that ive actually got up and walked out of a restaurant without paying for a single thing but i was so upset - i didnt care! i have been once before and the shrimp starter is nice but it is more expensive than anywhere ive been before. if you want the best japanese food, go to little tokyo in leeds - its the best! the manager was soooo rude!

Buzz Bar has going for it, as per the title of this review, that it is 'fast and fresh'. You can see the food being made, and even request little tweaks to the menu. The staff are more than happy to accommodate on that front!

Sadly as a 'sushi bar'/authentic Japanese food fare, this place just is not up to scratch. If you're expecting a Wagamama's style noodle soup express experience, then you will not be disappointed.

If you prefer real sushi, and authentic style Japanese cooking then your not going to find what you are looking for.

Reasonable prices, good selection of the usual drinks, and usually lively with students/young professionals having fun.

Oh the booth-style decors nice too.

I have been to Buzz more times than I can count! Although the menu is a little bit limited and expensive, the dishes and flavours are fantastic.

It is open every day, and doe get very busy over the weekends. But if you can get a table, give it a try! They also have some great drinks, the plum wine is very good, easy to drink far too much of it!

The kitchen is open to the restaurant, which is nice to see and makes things a little more interesting, especially when you realise that all of the food is made by only one or two chefs!

If you want somewhere a little bit different to eat in York, you have to give it a try.
