Reviews for The Good Food Shop
We popped in here last Saturday afternoon, as we were in York for the day, and bought several packs of Masham, some pieces of cheese and some choc biscuits. Very nice and not cheap - the till showed a total just under £30.

The food is as you would expect for a price that I am only just prepared to pay. They are local and I do like to support local businesses. However, I am fed up with the manager's haughty nature which is bizarre considering that she is supposed to make me feel welcome as a customer. I have been in to buy goods several times and not once have I come away satisfied with how I have been treated. I don't ask for much. Disappointing. The butcher's and the cafe on the same road really could teach them a lesson or two in being friendly.
I'm afraid I have to disagree quite strongly with saffire's review. The shop is small. If you want cheap, go buy Tesco's own brand. If you want GOOD (as the name suggests), be prepared to pay a little bit extra for it. Also because of its size I would think they find it hard to stock one of everything a person could want. They won't have Portabello Road for a stock room. What they do have is always good, though, and I've found that anything you want that they don't have can be procured within reason.
And as for the owner, she's always been very accomodating whenever I have been in. Clearly Saffire thinks everyone should be Disney Store employees!
The row of shops on Bishopthorpe road buck the trend for most small local businesses, they are used very regularly by people in the area and do quite a good trade.
One of the oldest is the Good Food shop. It sells some nice products, but it can be a bit over-priced. There are quite a few deli-items, but a lot of them are very mediocre, and the range never seems to change. I sometimes find the range of products a little odd, there are some nuts but they aren't organic, there is one egg free mayonnaise, but only flavoured with tarragon, not the plain version.
But the main problem is the lady that runs the shop. She always seems to be in a bad mood and very unfriendly, and it almost feels awkward to be in her shop.
