L'Antica Locanda is a very charming restaurant in an area of York that is steeped in history - The Shambles.
My wife and I arrived without making a reservation but were told that we could have a table within a few minutes. True to his word, we were shown to our table in a cosy little room upstairs which seated around 25 people.
We asked for a bottle of House Red which was a delightful Merlot and at £11 was not out of the way. Our starters were Smoked Salmon with Prawn and Chicken Liver Pate with Ciabatta. These were both £6.95 and were distinctly average but acceptable.
I next chose Penne l'Arrabiatta at £7.95 with my wife choosing a Steak Diane at £13.95, with which I think I should add, came no accompaniments. These had to be bought separately. My Penne was tasty with the bacon and caramelised onions giving it a nice taste. The Steak however was limp, tasteless and looked more like Pork. The only saving grace was the fact that it was tender. I called the waiter over and asked him if this was in fact a Sirloin Steak as it looked more like Pork. We were told that it was probably from a small cow!!?? and the meat was sourced from York's best Butcher and if we didn't believe it to be Beef, we could ask them..!!
There are a lot of nice places to eat in York and I suggest anyone reading this review to look elsewhere This is not one of the places I will be returning to.
