Boy, isn't the Goodramgate end of town a real haven for good food & drink. Up there with "La Bottega" & "KoKo Bar" is "Rafi's Spice Box" for all serious curryphiles who want a lot more than paste in a jar. They make up bespoke recipes to suit your palate on the hoof and ensure a far better than average result. Add to that the huge array of Indian foods & cooking ingredients off the shelf & you have a seriously decent resource on your doorstep...

I just popped in to collect one of their famous spice packs (hand mixed, pop them in a pan, add meat and water, and curry appears!), what a fabulous place. I came out with a bag of bits and pieces, all of which I've been looking for for ages.

Rafi's Spice Box, one of those rare finds that ensures one returns again and again. Set on Goodramgate Rafi's offers real Indian food including chutney's and vegetable, but the real pièce de résistance are the spice boxes that turn you at once from lover of Indian food to chef! The boxes are designed with the novice in mind and mean that anyone can make from scratch (with a little Rafi's magic) so that your own at home dishes can be as flavour-some and sumptuous as the best Indian that you have (n)ever had! And your kitchen smells rather splendid too!

Essentially an 'Indian food shop', Rafi's is a very friendly family run business that offers so much more. The spice boxes are what have made Rafi's famous in York; where any curry that you can imagine can be created for you on the spot in a flash of Rafi's expert knowledge and inspiration your very own selection of herbs and spices will be boxed up so to add your own meat and vegetables to cook up as a treat later on! This means that vege/pesca/meat-tarians alike can enjoy genuiene curries as you decide what to add to the spices!

Be warned though, 'enough for four' on the box, the capacity of these things are enormous! Making one box up in one go, you will find that you probably have enough for a small dinner party. So why not invite some friends round, share some wine and enjoy some authentic Indian food. Better than any Indian restaurant that I have ever been to, and more enjoyable too!
