Blake Head represents the culmination of all that is arty and intellectual with a heady mix of homecooked tempting dishes. Essentially this is an elaborate tea room cafe on the back of a (overpriced) bookshop.

A favourite amongst York 'locals' the Blake's Head is located at the top of micklegate away from the main central drag of York and therefore home to those 'nice' families who reside in the local area.

This means that things do get a little crowded at weekends. And be prepared for the best selection of the home cooked offerings to be gone by early lunchtime. Although if you find yourself on a sugar low, i can highly recommend the homemade flap jacks and brew of tea that is always avaible.

if its a rainy day chances are the Blakes Head will be more than overcrowded, especially popular with buggies and those 'trendy' new parents keen to show off their eco - friendliness and catch up on their reading at the same time. Think Guardian readers in their natural environment and this will give you an impressiion of the general ambience of the place.

But what about the food? Well the majority is homemade, with delightful slection of pies, quiche, stews, rissotto's etc. Portions are excellent. But my favourite is the breakfast menu, with selections including pancakes, porriage , muslei's etc and the option of soya milk for all you health junkies.

Blakes Head gets only 3 stars as the setting of the cafe is often over cramped , and with rather uncomfortable seats. That aside the food and books make this a place to stay even not on a rainy day.

This lovely cafe is nestled in the back of an unassuming bookshop at the top of Micklegate.

Filling main dishes for breakfast and lunch. A selection of home-made cakes and great coffee.
