ok so as soon as you look in the window you know this is an old fashioned pretentious tea shop. My girlfriend wanted to go and so I found myself, a 23 year old bloke said at a table with stacked plates of eclairs (complete with doyles) being served by a waitress in a frilly hat and pinny. All this is part of the theme I know, but you would, as those prices, expect the food to be really good. But it didn't, the cakes were small and really overpriced and the coffee wasnt anything special. Also the atmosphere was stale and unfriendly. I can see it would appeal to and older kind of woman that wants to appear to be a certain way, but at these prices I wouldnt bother.

Visiting Little Bettys was the highlight of our trip to York. We visited it for lunch on the first day and came back for afternoon tea the following day.

At around £15 per head for Afternoon Tea I think it is great value for money. We each had finger sandwiches, 3 various cakes, the biggest scone I have ever seen, jam, cream and a pot of tea...we were throughly stuffed! For the few cakes we couldn't manage they boxed them up to take back to the hotel with us. I can also highly recommend the home made raspberry lemonade.

Apart from the Afternoon Tea it can seem expensive, but the food is top quality and the staff and atmosphere is wonderful.

I'm glad I found out about this little gem. Well worth joining the often short queue here rather than the big queue at the bigger Bettys.

no trip to york is without a trip to Betty's tea rooms. It is an institution. little known compared to its larger and not as cute older sister is Little bettys cafe. Still the same Betty's menu, but hidden inside a victorian antiquated building that twists, turns and proivdes some very satisfying uneven floorboards.

Little betty's is situated on Stonegate , possibly yorks most tourist filled street. Or maybe it just feels that way as too many people's stop to stare at the residence street performer whose act is to cover oneself in purple paint and sit atop a purple bike. No i don't get it either.

Navigate round Mr Purple and into Little Betty's and you are more than likely to find that the queue is twice as short as that to get into big betty's! Plus the minature cafe downstairs is tweeness to the nth degree as cakes are squashed against a range of teas and little chocolates as only betty's knows how to do best.

Betty's menu is frequently updated and moves with the seasons. this time our afternoon tea time was enjoyed with seasonal simmel cake, thats 'posh' fruit cake with marzipan served with wensleydale to you and me. It went wonderfully with our large pot of china rose tea. So much so my companion and i went back for more. More tea, not cake; we were already too full!

the staff are always wonderfully attentive, and even if its busy you can gaze at the pinofored attire as your bill arrives swiftly on a silver platter. Just as Betty herself would insist on receiving it.

Stay for long leisurely afternoon tea. Go to walk it off round the walls.
