Reviews for KoKo International Bar
A nice place to relax and enjoy a wide range of beers
Lovely building with great views of York Minster.
We enjoyed the draught Hacker Weizen but the English cask ales were terribly cloudy and were told to accept this by the bar staff as it was a chill haze! Not sure if the beer is being well cared for?
There were some very drunk locals in with a bit of clique at the bar.
Otherwise, the bar man / owner was really pleasant and knowledable.
Koko Bar is of the small, but perfectly formed watering hole variety.
Bars and pubs are what York has most. Famed for more pubs than there are days of the year, Koko stands out as one of the best. Which means that it must be good.
First the range of beers is especially fine. But more pleasing for us spirit(ed) afficianados is the wine list. There are two (!) Sancerre's available by the glass (£4) AND a deletectabe Chenin Blanc whose grassy fresh filled notes will have you gasp 'oh just one more'!
Also rather pleasant is the view. Pride of place is to chin wag with the local yocals and friendly staff at the bar, but if you choose to sit in the window you are situated directly in front of York's other famed cultural icon, The Minster.
My recommendation is to sip and slurp and enjoy the view in front of the house of God. Wonder if she pops in for a pint?
I popped into Ko Ko and couldn't believe my eyes - Stella Artois now on one of the fonts. My heart sank - giving in to the market forces of the mass produced UK Wifebeater.
Or so I thought !!!!
The genial host put me right in my place - "it's genuine imported Stella Artois from Leuven". Anyone who's ever drank Stella outside of these isles know that it gives any Lager a run for its money. Light, beautifully balanced beer.
Why do Inbev insult the British by brewing the excrement that we drink over here, when the rest of Europe has access to the real thing rather than the heavy, metallic aftertasting pretender that tastes nothing like the real thing.
Good for Ko Ko - taking the trouble to import this beer and re-educate York drinkers as to what they're missing...
This used to be a well kept secret but judging by the swarms of people in on Saturday the word is beginning to spread about this genuinely lovely little bar run by a genial landlord with an encyclopedic knowledge of Drinks...
I had a smashing pint of Kolsch followed by a Paulaner and got chatting with some friendly regulars.
You can't fault what this bar does - a huge array of Beers, Wines & Spirits in a relaxed atmosphere. I'll be going again...
If you want a Bar where you have a choice of over 100 Beers, including 9 on draught coupled with friendly staff and clientele then you just have to visit KoKo.
It's easy to miss but worth the effort to find just near St Williams College and York Minster. A lovely 15th Century building with beams and nooks and crannies and a really eclectic set of customers from students to couples to groups to beer tickers - all here for good beer, great cocktails or really well thought out wine lists - I know people who come just for the Primitivo red wine they import from Italy.
There's draught beers from Czech, Germany, Belgium, Holland and the UK, 2 fridges of 100+ bottled beers and over 250 different spirits on the shelfs behind the bars. A laid back atmosphere assures that people keep coming back. Also well reviewed in Boak & Bailey's UK Beer Blog...
