Reviews for The Golden Ball
Classic local. Particularly good and 'locally' on a York Race Day. You can cut through the drunk dross in the city centre and sup something nice and civilised here. Great garden.
Can we get this factually correct please - it's not named after Beckham - it's called THE GOLDEN BALL (singular!!)
That said, whatever you call it - it's a classic local boozer that serves great real ale, has friendly attentive owners and has not savaged the original decor. The front bar is as near as a damn it as perfect a "front bar" in the old fashioned sense of the word as you can get. With its stone floor and basic tables and decor, it's the sort of place that would be mentioned in "The Death of the English Pub" were it rewritten today - as a great example of what the brewers are doing their best to desecrate and should be preserved for those who know nothing better than ersatz decor and faux themed boozers.
It's a time peice that has remained relevant today due to the clientele and landlord & landlady's love & care. The only music you'll get is live acoustic - mainly folk jams...
Bit of a classic local - with decent beer.. Small outside space. Staff and students can also staff from the University. So it is not too much of a blocky local. Oh and no piped music !
