Surprisingly good value
The Denton Bar and Dining Rooms, formerly known ( and probably forever will be, in the minds of locals )as The Denton Lounge, used to be known prior to its recent revamp for mediocre food in pleasant but dated surroundings. Thankfully both the interior and the food have received an upgrade. The Denton is clean, neat, with classic comfortable furnishings, a light and airy place to eat and people watch, or stare out to sea, as you please. I visited today with my parents and had an extremely tasty lunch.
We started with tea for 3 ( 1.20 each, clean white china and good quality tea, not the usual obviously catering standard floor sweepings ).Dad had his inevitable jacket potato with cheese ( 3.95 ), Mum and I went for a couple of the day's specials - honey roast ham, new potatoes and salad for me, ( 5.50 ) fresh local caught cod for her ( 7.95 ). The portions were very generous and the quality of ingredients could not be faulted.
Mum's fish was beautifully fresh, huge pearly white tender flakes, with large-cut chips, mushy peas and fresh tartare sauce. I was expecting hot buttered new potatoes with mine so was a little surprised at them arriving in the form of potato salad - but it was nicely homemade,( with fresh mint in the dressing ) as was the coleslaw, and the ham was not some mingy paper thin supermarket soggy pieces, but proper thick tender slices off the bone of a real ham, with superb flavour.
The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. I have paid the equivalent price or more for similar meals in various other eateries in the same area and received far less in the way of decent nosh and cleanliness. The menu is not adventurous but sticks to simple classics, well executed. Recommended !
