Gourmet Pizza is my wife and my favourite place to eat in Winchester.
We have been spending much time in the town over the past 5 years visiting family and friends and have eaten in many of the diverse eating houses, but have found Gourmet to be the friendliest, tastiest and cosiest restaurant.
It is situated in a prime spot in the square near to the beautiful Winchester Cathedral and elegant boutique shops. On a summer's day it is so refreshing to eat outoors there, either in the courtyard at the rear or sit in cafe style chairs in the front of the place, simply people watching in the suumer sunshine.
It is always a relaxed atmosphere and the staff are so friendly we are on first name terms now.
The food is always good, well prepared and freshly cooked. We never feel we are being 'rushed' or 'pressurised by the staff to choose the food they want us to eat- unlike many other restaurants we have been in.
The mushroom starter 'chiabatta con funghi' is my favourite followed by 'goats cheese pizza'.
The desserts are always served beautifully and the large selection of wines are of a very good standard.
Long may this popular and classy restaurant continue to serve the people of Winchester!
Me and my partner took our two children to the restaurant, mainly because they love pizza.... after all, what child doesn't?! We were welcomed warmly and continued to receive fantastic customer service throughout the meal. The children were asked individually what they wanted to eat and the waiter was prepared with games on hand to occupy them whilst they waited for their meals. I was surprised with the level of thoughtfulness, and how valued even the youngest of customers are!
There were many choices and we asked the waiter what he recommended, and we both chose the Italian Meatball pizza, which was one of the specials. The children each had small portions of the bolognese (which I was told was the manager's own recipe!). The food was delicious and our table was cleared promptly after we finished, to make way for our desserts. The children had small ice creams each, while my husband and myself shared the cheesecake (which was to die for!). The waiter even offered to make the children some chocolate sauce!
The whole family enjoyed the meal, and we will happily return there in the near future!
It is days like this I just love living in Winchester. With a crisp, sunny, autumn day, my wife and I decided to descend on the city with one thing in mind… food. After hearing so many good things about Gourmet in the square from my daughter and grandchildren my wife and I arrived a little after 2pm.
Looking around it made a refreshing change with a perfect, rustic charm with an instant family feel, a far cry from the solitary middle class, middle aged women in the windows of other local restaurants propped up with a bottle of wine in the middle of the afternoon. This restaurant was buzzing with warm and enthusiastic young staff and an equally diverse cliental. From prominent ‘Winchester Royalty’ to local councillors and even a premier league footballer in the corner, Gourmet must be doing something very right. This family run business was still buzzing with the excitement of the lunchtime rush and children in particular were given special attention. From games to chef’s hats it was clear that the children were welcomed just as much as the adults.
The menu was clearly appealing to a wide range of customers and not just the passing tourist. With a mixture of mouth watering starters to a wide selection of salads, pastas and pizzas we were spoilt for choice however decided upon a Brushetta garnished with fresh basil leaves and a starter size portion of Bantry bay mussels to start, cooked in fresh cream, garlic and white wine, both equally delicious and presented beautifully.
The main courses, Italian meatball pizza and a fresh crab linguine were recommended from the specials board and it is clear why. The pizza was crisp and perfectly seasoned with Italian herbs, black pepper and creamy mascarpone and the pasta was cooked in Italian white wine, garlic, olive oil, red chilli and lemon juice, simple, yet delectable.
I expressed my thanks to my waitress and sent my compliments to the chef. The response was “why don’t you tell him yourself?” After being welcomed up the winding stairs and discovering the restaurant is on 4 levels it’s clear why so many of the staff are in such trim shape. I interrupted the chef experimenting with recipes for next weeks specials board and sampled some delightful pastas. The kitchen was immaculate and – always sceptical about restaurants - I was on the look out for microwaves and hot plates, however, I saw nothing of the sort. I simply saw a kitchen heaped in fresh fruit, vegetables and raw ingredients which were cooked to order.
To top off the experience we finished our meal with some fresh ground Italian coffee, debatably the best in Winchester and 2 slices of homemade cake, carrot and lemon, which I was told the manager bakes at home on her day off. I was told they cater for parties over 30 and serve from 11am – 10.30 pm 7 days a week. An altogether wonderful experience - well recommended.
I ate there this afternoon. Its clear that the owner/manager a female in her early 40's - who incidentally will age beyond her years in the way she whizzes up and down the stairs and forces a smile at all who enter... is a very committed and well intended restauranteur. It was 3 pm and I wasnt sure if they were still serving. I wish that they weren't. It was sunny outside and I chose to sit inside as there were many shoppers bustling amongst the tables. With my back to the sunlight I could see the light filter through the unpolished glassware - showing up all the lipstick and sticky finger marks that a lazy staff team couldnt be bothered making right. I ordered some wine and it was a screw topped sauvignon blanc at 18.95 - You hope when you get a bottle of mid range wine - that you get something decent to accompany it. I ordered the bantry bay mussels. These were the owner/managers favourite. She could tell; " we were going to get along". They arrived and I knew that relationship was going to be one sided. Tiny, tiny, pasty and I dare to say it - but could have been microwaved!- if actually heated. The garlic cream and white wine sauce - was as bad as a condensed tin of campbells soup left out over night. With no finger bowl I amde do with an extra napkin. I asked for a bowl for the shells - which didnt need to be too large as the portion was small. There was no spoon which was lucky as I can sometimes get greedy - even where I am not so keen to finish - but couldnt be bothered complaining as a sinle diner. Although I hadnt touched the bowl of goo that was in the bowl - there was no surprise when I replied that I thought they; "were ok" - it was replied that she "really liked them". I wasnt being bigotted against Irish Mussels - just the chefs ability to prepare them.
Sorry to continue - and I wont go on too much - but got a green salad. They had ran out of rocket - that I had asked for and ended with a green mixed leaf salad with one of the worst "saladdy salad cream dressings" I have had the misfortune of having spread across a wilting salad. The pizza base was too crisp. The asparagus too al dente and the egg - overcooked (rubbery). Even the pepper mill grinds fine pepper and not cracked.
I listened to the owner/manager tell again an array of dishes were her favourite "of the moment". They will likely keep going for 18-24 months. Clearly inexerienced. The tills will ring for a while - but will burn out. They obviously have careers to fall back on - which isnt a bad thing.
I love italian food and one of my favourites is pizza. I'm also a bit of a pizza snob so Gourmet Pizza had a lot to prove! Not just because of the name. If you call yourself gourmet, then you better had be! Luckily they did live up to their name though. The place itself has a great ambiance, however can get quite busy, especially downstairs. Theer are other seating options available, upstairs and outdoors (but useful only when its warm and dry! The pizzas are professionally made, great crispy bases and the toppings are delicious. Prices are around average for this type of food
The ground floor restaurant gets very packed and you could end up a bit squashed. Try to sit upstairs if you can, or outdoors on a warm day. Imaginative pizzas and pastas.
GP is a versitile place to eat. Sitting outside in the square on a beautiful day is well worth the time. The food is good with interesting specials. We had a great meal. Mains about £7/8.
