Reviews for The Wheatsheaf
Had a great long walk around the lake. Tired and hungry we ventured into the pub for some refreshment. It was sunday lunchtime and the place was full to bursting. Managed to get a table quite quickly, ordered lunch. We were told waiting time for food was about 30 mins. Within 5 minutes a lady came and laid our table. Then 15 minutes later our meals arrived. Fantastic value for money meals. All home cooked. Chicken, ham and mushroom pie with lovely selection of fresh vegetables and the most delicious mashed potatoes - yummy. The lady came back and asked us how the meals were too. Didnt have room for a pud but the menu was great. I think they coped admirably with the amount of people they were serving - a job well done.
The Wheatsheaf is an inn that's situated close to the lake and car park at Virginia Water. Because of its location, it's a natural place to head to for refreshment when visiting the lake, so I've been there several times. I've never been particularly enamoured of it, though, and certainly won't be going again following my last meal there in September 2007.
A friend and I went for lunch. She ordered scampi and chips, I ordered stroganoff - a favourite dish of mine, so I didn't mind paying a price-tag of circa. £14. Well! I've never before or since experienced a stroganoff quite like the one I was served that day, and hope I never have to.
A little bit of chewy meat had been piled on top of a timbale of rice in a bowl, then lashings upon lashings of sauce added. The island of meat and rice quickly disintegrated into the sea of sauce as soon as I started to eat, creating what can only be described as a very expensive bowl of soup. Finding that I was having to trawl though the sauce with my fork in search of anything solid to eat, I called the waiter over to politely complain. He was completely disinterested, merely offering me a spoon with which to finish my 'soup'. A SPOON! Talk about missing the point! He also claimed that other diners had complained that there wasn't enough sauce.
Deciding that I was dealing with an imbecile, I complained once more when I went up to the bar to pay. The barman, like the waiter, was utterly disinterested in what I had to say. Obviously I left no tip, but, out of consideration to my friend who was having a rough week, didn't make any further fuss.
Seriously, there's plenty of other places in this area that one can go to. Don't waste your money at The Wheatsheaf.
