Bouzy Rouge
12 East Bargate, Southampton, SO14 2DJ
The surroundings are dated, to say the least, in fact the place looks like a 70s sleazy club.
The staff - well, lets just say we didnt leave a tip for good service.
Water glasses were used to serve wine and then we were just left with the bottle of water. I guess we were supposed to drink from the bottle.
The food - the worst food I have had in a long time....
Reviews for Bouzy Rouge
I am with Nev on their review as this is the place my husband and I ate at last night and the place was a shambles!

The food - the worst food I have had in a long time. There was nothing nice about it at all.
The place was roasting, and heaving with a hen party and a large birthday party. So rowdy you couldnt even talk between yourselves.
I was intrigues by Kitty89 - who is/was a waitress at this place and commented on Nev's review to say that Nev didnt know the difference between braising and fillet steak - well Kitty honey, you clearly havent got a clue as you state that the owner pays £60 per fillet. Laughable!!!!! I take it you mean £6 cos if you did mean £60 you clearly live in cloud cuckoo land. Either way its all down to cooking - so it simply means that the chef hasnt got a clue; which was backed up by my disgusting meal last night. It was (apparently) a rack of lamb. Well I eat rack of lamb often and this was not a rack of lamb as there is no fat on a rack yet my lamb last night was mostly fat. But hey ho, it probably cost £50 to buy in so how dare I complain!
Bottom line is, this place is a sleazy joint, catering mostly to large parties so if you want good food, nice decor and ambience give it a very wide berth and head somewhere nice such as the Olive Tree or the Oxford Brasserie. They will show you how its done and Nev, the Brasserie will serve you the best fillet steak in town!!!
For steak and meat you're fine. Anything resembling a vegetable is less appealing - but then why come here when the emphasis is on meat, meat, meat. Generally slap dashed and lacking inspiration. Could do with a new menu!
Likely to be a lively atmosphere as the restaurant is contained in a small and twisted alice in wonderland setting - used to be a cellar.
Wine menu is nice, again lacks anything to really get the palate going.
In short it's 'fine', but could do with a shake up.
Staff very attentive, and manager Mark is attentive to feedbacks. Hopefully he'll read this and get Bouzy Rogue a better profile - perhaps a change of name?...
Went here on a Friday night - it was pretty busy. The decor is a bit different from most restaurants - a little eclectic, but very nice and it creates a nice atmosphere.
The menu had some interesting choices on it - I was most disappointed that someone had already ordered the last portion of wild boar, so I had to go for quail instead, although that was very tasty. Also you get to choose a selection of veg side dishes to go with your meal which includes more interesting choices than the normal chips, potatoes, peas, carrots etc! We had sauteed potatoes and leeks and mushrooms.
Overally, it was a very nice experience and I'll probably go back again!
I have been here a couple of times with family and my Fiance, and we all agree that the only place you will get a better steak is America!
We love the steak so much there it's the only place we will go for a steak! fantastic!
This is a firm favorite the food is very good. The service is on the ball. The place is small and can get very busy, you need to book well in advance most weekends.A great place for a romantic dinner for two or a family celebration.
I've never written on these things before, but just had to let people know about the 2nd worst resturant I've ever been to. Ok, very friendly staff will not have a word said against them, but that's about all this place has to offer. A 70's nightmare. So this would have been fun and perhaps added somehing to the evening but when the food is so bad it just added to the nightmare. The crockery is striaght from my grandmother's wedding set and paper napkins not a good start. So the food - shocking. A chicken mayo starter with prawns and rice, was a sandwich filler from the Co-Op and at £6.40 would expect a whole lot more. The girlfriend have pizza mushrooms, cheese and bacon in a mushroom, you can't go wrong but again at £6.30, its a bit steep. Mains, you must be having a steffi Graf, a fillet steak my arse (braising at best). The girlfriend's chicken wrapped in filo pastry again was so wrong. Chicken looked processed and the jelly sauce was far too sweet and was swimming in it. We had to have a look at the desserts and were hopeful that a Black Forest Gateaux would take pride of place, but our hopes were dashed and so we were unable to complete our 70's night out. Perhaps we missed a trick about the kitsch/70's thing, but the food was so bad you just couldn't forgive the place. The wine selection and veg sides were good though. In times of the credit crunch save the dosh and give this place a wide berth. A £10 M&S meal deal would have been so much better. Simon
Incidentally, whether or not you think M & S food is bad, good, processed or whatever, it is a MASSIVE improvement on the food served at Bouzy Rouge.
My smoked haddock starter was full of bones, unlike the smoked haddock you buy at M & S. My rack of lamb (the waitress said it was rack of lamb) was fatty and disgusting - unlike actual rack of lamb, al la M & S, which actually has NO fat.
If you work in Bouzy Rouge I would suggest you still dont know what good food is either!
I was invited to the Boozy Rouge for a leaving party. Its behind Lush next to the Bargate Centre, you go downstairs into this really nice restaurant. The staff there are wonderful, always helpful.
Then you get to the food, very good menu, not limited in style or number of dishes really either. The food is superb, a little pricy but very worth paying for.
Would create a great romantic atmosphere for that special dinner!
A lovely restaurant ideal for either a romantic meal or a (older) family meal as the menu is more suited to an adults pallete. However the food is delicious, with a mixture of dishes, steaks and vegetarian food aswell as a great opportunity to try new foods.
