134 Bevois Valley Road, Southampton, SO14 0JZ

This is a fairly grungy, student type place. It is found in the Bevois Valley area of Southampton at the bottom of Portswood High Street. As you can probably tell from the name, it is themed with The Hobbit / Lord of The Rings books by JRR Tolkien. As such some of the more popular drinks are a gandulf or a frodo, and there are cocktails named after several characters. These are however, of quite a worrying colour, and do not have a massive amount of alcohol. There are often live bands to...

Where else can you go in Southampton and find half the pub sitting outside in winter? Nowhere that I know of. This makes the Hobbit a great pub for smokers. In summer of course more than half the punters are sat in the huge garden out the back. In winter though there are still plenty of friendly randoms to chat to and as a bonus they even have outdoor heaters!

The best thing about the Hobbit is the people who go there. It has a great mix of students and hippies. Now I’m not a hippy myself but I like hanging out with them. For starters even in a drought most hippies know someone growing their own so if you pop down there and get chatting it won’t take long til you can find someone to score off. And when you’ve spent two hours chatting to your new best friend and you’ve secured your rugs for the evening you’re as likely to be taken to a bangin’ student house party as you are to your new best friend’s squat/ hippy van.

The beer there is ok, they often have Summer Lightning as a guest Ale which is in my top five beers of all time. Also they have some rather yummy cocktails that are £3 during happy ‘hour’ (before 8pm on most days I think and all day Friday) and £4 at other time and have at least four shots in. Three Gollums and you're not driving home!

What can you say about The Hobbit, its rather cool, random venue, with so much to offer, good drink, pool, live music, the largest beer garden you will find on a huge hill...and sometimes even great food.
A great pre-club venue to meet friends and catch up before heading up to the Dungeon or Lennons!
Several levels of the pubs, two bars, and a huge beer garden give it a huge capacity. There are two live music bits, usually for live rock music but sometimes its dance/psytrance on! Its something different every time.

The only thing that annoys me about The Hobbit is that there is a tendency if you don't dress cool enough to go in there, they don't want you in there and will I.D. everybody in you're group...which for a pub that you would think is friendly and accept anybody in is a rather disappointing attitude. They should sort themselves out.

Gandalf cocktail is my personal favourite but the Bilbo is equally effective at getting you absolutely smashed!
The Hobbit is one of my favourite places to visit when doing a bar crawl in the student area of Southampton. The beer garden is huge and full of seating areas and the bands that visit are always usually top-notch.
The Hobbit has something for everyone and a good night is always guaranteed.

The hobbit, the hobbit, the HOBBIT. A mental place really which serves awesome cocktails which you cannot resist trying. Gandolf, Legolass (my favourite) to name a few. It has many rooms that have different offerings. Quiet rooms so you can chat, a pool table and games room, a live stage or open mike room (where my mate has played before) and a beer garden which sells chips! Upstairs the pub has a jukebox, ATM cash machine and the toilets which are in better condition than the ones outside, so avoid them!! Overall this is a friendly pub which generally has unusual characters in which to chat to when you are starting to feel the affects of your drink.

One of the things I miss about Southampton is The Hobbit. The cocktails are great - try a Gandalf or two. Absolutely superb! The pub has so many areas that mean you can have a few drinks and a chat with friends and the live music doesn’t disturb you. You can of course get a front row seat for the action, if you wish. Nothing beats a nice sunny day when you can go and sit outside. I would give the outside toilets a miss though if you’re anything less than drunk but apart from that, top marks to a great pub.
