Reviews for Scalinis
Scalinis is a great place to go with friends. As said in a previous review its not great for a romantic meal or when you are trying to get to know someone. This is because of the noise. It does have great entertainment in terms of tv screens but they do ramp up the sound so you have to shout at the person you are dining with! Not the most romantic! However the food here (and the service) more than make up for the noise! You have a large choice of food on the menu and there were lots that i wanted to try! Maybe it was just me being greedy! Really tasty puddings too!
I really enjoyed Scalini’s food. There’s a good variety of choice so there’s something for everyone. The prices are also reasonable compared to other restaurant with a good range. Portions are mostly reasonable, although the gnocchi was more than enough for two people.
What I don’t like about them is their entertainment. They have screens everywhere so you can hardly miss the tasteless music videos that play during dinner. Since my idea of a good night out doesn’t include pole-dancing strip routines while I’m having my food, I wouldn’t go back there unless it was for lunch (maybe).
Because the music plays so loud everyone raises their voices when talking. I had a massive headache afterwards. It’s certainly not a place for a relaxed or romantic evening.
There are lots of Italian restaurants in Jesmond, all doing very similar fare, but if I'm heading out for pizza or pasta, I tend to end up here or Franchesca's. It's always busy, but they have plenty of tables, and if you have to wait, then grab a beer at the bar upstairs and it won't be more than 15 minutes normally.
I nearly always end up having a pizza, and the bases are thin and crispy, without too much topping to make it all gooey and undercooked. The range is descent enough, and I'll not be stuck for something to eat. The pasta always seems to go down well, with a dish who's name escapes me but that involves thin strip steak and a tomato sauce looked brilliant when somebody I was with had it.
The staff are always polite and friendly enough, but I've not spotted a personality amongst them, through with somewhere this busy I can imagine its difficult to be more than polite and efficient.
Always worth a go, never too expensive and even has a 0% beer on the menu (handy for us drivers who can't face another bloody pint of coke), there are plenty of alternatives if you can't get in, but it's a good spot.
