  independent cinema at its best

  the tyneside serves up a mix of art house films and more mainstream commercial fodder. it's just had a massive overhaul and was temporarily housed in gateshead but is back in its original location. downstairs is a good little cafe/bar which does awesome old- fashioned lemonade. the screens themselves may seem small if you're used to odeon multiplexes, but do not let that put you off. the tyneside has heaps of character and its locals are rightly proud of it. the usual snacks, sweets, popcorn are available and at slightly better prices than you would find in a megabucks national chain - cheapskates may still want to bring their own though. staff are helpful and extremely knowledgable.

  Bringing back some glamour

  As the title of my review suggests a trip to the Tyneside Cinema adds instant glamour to what is normally 'just going to see a film'.
  
  The fabulous revamped cinema boasts several screens and several options for an evening's entertainment.
  
  The most recent time I went, I went with my friend whose Grandparents had met in the coffee rooms upstairs some 50 years ago.
  
  I love the history of the cinema, and I love all the added touches they've put in, like the displays of times gone by, and the replica window.
  
  The main cinema had lovely plush velvet seats which are really comfy, and curtains covering the screen until the film starts.
  
  It's the same price as the other cinemas in Newcastle and a lot nicer. I only wish I'd worn my ball gown!!

  Only recently re-opened after an extensive multi-million pound refit, the Tyneside is the premier place to see the latest blockbuster, art house or revival film.
  
  Yhe refit brought back the decor unseen for decades plus the addition of 2 new screens, so that a wider and moe diverse range of films can be shown in variety of formats from 16mm to latest digital projection all in between
  
  Each screen is fully licensed so you can have a drink whilst watching a movie. In addition in the large Classic screen the Classic Circle has leather made armchairs ans sofas for a more comfortable cinema viewing (at additional cost).
  
  Of course in addition to the cinemas & bar, theres the coffee bar and the famous Tyneside coffee rooms.
  
  And now you can book online your tickets - this is helpful as some short runs of films sell out pretty quickly.

  An independant gem!

  There's just something about the Tyneside Cinema that makes seeing a film a real treat. Most people aren't even aware that the place exists, let alone that it is a mere 2 minutes from the Monument.
  
  Having been a fan of the Tyneside for at least the last 16years I can honestly say that it is one of the best cinemas I have been to.
  
  One of the great things about the Tyneside is the fact that although they do show big blockbusters you can also see a range of quirky arty films that you wouldn't get the change to see on the big screen. They often show classic films, long forgotten gems that you may have missed the first time around...
  
  The cinema has recently had a huge refurbishment to bring back some of the art deco details and has only recently reopened back on the old site. The seats are comfy, prices reasonable and sometimes it's just nice to go independant... Try it but be warned - it might just become addictive!

  Best Cinema in Newcastle!

  Yes you heard me! There's not so much of a price difference between the Tyneside and the big cinemas anymore, but at this recently refurbished instituion in the heart of Newcastle you can expect the finest film selections bar none.
  
  With it's main entrance located down the side street it's amazing how many people simply pass this one by. With three screens, ranging from grand to intimate, across 5 or so floors in a classic building in itself you can watch the last indie buzz film alongside carefully selected blockbusters. Generally in much more comfortable chairs and easygoing surroundings than the Gate. And you can buy beer in the screening itself!
  
  It now also features free screening or special events, such as screenings of news reels from the 1950s, from time to time.
