Reviews for Odeon Newcastle Upon Tyne
This cinema is now an Empire cinema and not the Odeon anymore. I find it a lovely place to enjoy a film and there is something really cosy about the place! The price of entry is standard to what you will pay at any cinema these days, the price of snacks and drinks is also pretty standard, although always extortionate! There is parking underneath the cinema and a lift so you can park, ride up and not have to go outside on a cold winters day! They sell the usual snacks and have a Ben and Jerry's consession selling lovely ice cream! It gets very busy for any blockbuster so it's worth booking in advance!
The Empire is in The Gate complex in Newcastle upon Tyne centre and, as such, has an enviable location in comparison to some other cinemas. Strangely, it never seems to be particularly full; I find this quite surprising as I think it's perfectly positioned to enable patrons to make a night of of it and get something to eat or drink beforehand or afterwards.
In my opinion, what sets the Empire apart is the professionalism of the staff. All employees I have dealt with have been courteous and friendly and will go out of their way to help with any problems. I would recommended the Empire to anyone.
Nandos is a great place in my opinion. It offers me what I love most (and that’s chicken) as well as the food often being mildly spicy. I’m not a fan of very spicy food, it just takes all taste and flavour away from what every you’re eating and in my opinion, this makes it a waste of money. I don’t think Nandos do much which i would describe as “too spicy” luckily and so that’s why I’m so fond of their food. Their prices aren’t too bad and the staff are more than helpful. I’ve only been a handful of times but I intend to go a lot more often.
This has been an Empire cinema for some time, situated at the top floor of the mini-restaurant complex The Gate.
It is much larger and more accessable than the old Odeon which it replaced, having glass lifts up to the entrance.
There are self-service ticket machines located just near the entrance although most people queue at the counter.
A small shop is opposite the counter, serving the usual cinema munchies: popcorn sweet or salted, pick and mix jelly candy, cold drinks and chocolates. You can only get a few brand names in chocolate now: M and M's or Maltesers. This is a dissapointing selection when the old Odeon used to have their own brand here for a cheaper, tastier option.
Despite being opposite a large shopping complex (currently under development) and being amidst a dozen or so restaurants this cinema is frequently very empty. The most people I have attended a screening with is approximately 15! It seems to me they have more screens than they need but they seem to be doing big business, showing all the big box office hits. No smaller film shows here though, try the Tyneside Cinema for more unusual tastes.
Staff are young but skilled and it's a fun place to go - the first choice of cinema in Newcastle centre.
Formally an Odeon Cinema, but sold to the Empire chain.
This is on top floor of the Gate complex in the heart of the city. Featuring 12 screens (436 seats in largest to 67 in smallest screen) Seats are comfortable but don't have as much leg room as some (Cineworld)
