Reviews for Discovery Museum
The Discovery Museum is a huge and very impressive building, situated not far from Newcastle College and St James' Park. It looks like it may have been an old workhouse or something, quite a formidable place! As soon as you enter the building however, you're reassured by how bright, welcoming and entertaining the museum immediately is - you're greeted by a huge boat and lots of friendly staff! There's lots to see at The Discovery Museum: a well-stocked gift shop, a range of historical and scientific displays and lots of interactive resources for children. My favourite part of the museum is the walk through of Newcastle in the modern ages: eras such as the swinging sixties and the roaring twenties are covered, with some fab displays. And best of all - The Discovery Museum is free to enter!
well. i'm not even a teenager any more, but i used to come here all the time as a kid and my boyfriend and i went back last year to see how the discovery museum had changed. it as been revamped and is a bit more technologically savvy these days, with lots of interactive and computerised exhibits. very child-friendly but plenty for the adults to look at and enjoy too. it is very large - getting round in one day may be ambitious, especially if you have younger children. but the major advantage of the museum being free is that you can pop back any time you like to look at things again. perfect for when your child just has to see one small element of the exhibition again!
Well, where to start. First and most imprtantly it's Free. Yes, FREE! So as a day out for a family of five it was a great choice. On the downside, there is no free parking available, but an on-street pay and display is adjacent to the builing. We found it much easier, though, to use the nearby multi-storey car park, fom which it is only a few minutes walk to the museum.
There was something for everyone. I especially liked the Fashion through the Ages section and all of us enjoyed the hands on Science mall. The 'Playtyne' room was also very well thought out as it was a water based play area designed around the theme of the River Tyne. Lots of water around, but some protection was available for the kids by wearing the aprons provided and forthose that still got we, there were a number of blowdryers around the room.
As well as a onsite cafe, there was an area in the Science mall with tables, chairs and bins where a family group could eat their own picnic, which we did. So many other sections of the museum to enjoy that in all we spent nearly 6 hours there! A great wet weather location.
