Princess Square, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 8ER

Newcastle's best known rock bar - known by the regulars as just 'Trills' - is in a good position in the heart of the city centre and only a few minutes walk from most of the rock clubs you might want to move onto later in the evening. If you don't want to go on, the place does open late on Friday and Saturday nights.

Even on the busiest nights Trillians is still 'comfortably crowded' - enough to give it a good atmosphere, not so bad it's unbearable.

Even on the busiest nights Trillians is still 'comfortably crowded' - enough to give it a good atmosphere, not so bad it's unbearable.

At lunchtimes Trillans has a decent menu of light meals and snacks. Try the burgers which come with salad and a heap of tasty fires. The steak baguette is also delicious.

'Trills' has a wide range of drinks and even a few trademark cocktails. It seems to specialise in luridly coloured shots of various flavours.

At weekends Big Gordon DJs and provides a varied mixture of new stuff and rock classics. He's always happy to play requests (more likely if a lady asks it seems!)

Sometimes non-rock punters do get in here and spoil the atmosphere a bit but generally the atmosphere is really good. There are regular lives bands, well-known national and international acts as well as the chance of local unknowns to get some exposure.

As with mot places there are a few negatives. The toilets are grim, often the doors don't lock and often the toilets don't flush.

The decor is now looking tired and is in dire need of a revamp.

The staff shout at you for dancing on the stage even when there's no band on.

Trillians, hiding up a side street on Northumberland Street is a great place if you're a rock or metal music lover.
They have live bands most nights and open on a Fri and Saturday late for people who don't want to go clubbing. They have a DJ playing and he's more than happy to play requests. Just ask. Shy bairns get nowt.
Depending who it is the bands are either free or there is a small cover charge. It can get totally rammed for some bands.
They serve food daily which is well worth trying as the burgers are most excellent! Perfect hangover cure! Beer is reasonable. Try the Trillians Rock Beer if you're an ale lover.
