Great pub with friendly regulars 15th September 2008

I have to agree with the last reviewer, gingerchrismc. I have been to the pub both before and after the smoking ban, and can confirm there has been a marked improvement. Almost a new place in fact! Yes its a traditional pub, but the regulars are friendly and seem to want new people coming into the pub so they have a new person to talk to and share their stories! The staff are equally friendly and the choice of food on offer does not change on a regular basis. All of which is cooked to perfection by the way! I really do like the food here!

Contrary to the previous reviews, The County has smartened itself up lately. The introduction of the smoking ban was very welcome and much needed in this local pub. There are a great selection of beers on tap, almost matched by the selection of regulars that you can watch. I find that it is a great place to come for quiet drinks with friends, where you can easily spend an entire night.

Sooo wanted to love the pub after everything I had heard about it, however, the interior was firstly hard to spot through the haze of cigarette smoke, but liberal use of 80s velor, unchanging painted blackboards (offering tired food options) and nosiy gamblers seemed to clash against the care taken over the great range of beers. Maybe post the smoking ban I'll give it a second chance!

On the sadly all-too-rare occasions when I manage to get to Newcastle and see old friends, this is where we tend to meet up. Good selection of Real Ale.
