Barburrito offers freshly prepared Mexican food at an affordable price, though above student price in my case! They sell many different wraps containing a wide variety of fillings, which is probably the equivalent price of buying a starbucks frappochino! It is a very popular place to eat out, and when I went recently, a 20% student discount was offered. They also offer refillable drinks so you are definitely getting your money's worth there! The actual restaurant is fairly big and can seat quite a lot of people, with chairs outside as well. In 2006, it was voted as the best newcomer in the BBC Food and Drink Festival, and I would recommend it as a nice place to meet up with friends.

GLOBE in Didsbury opened two years ago and tore up the takeaway blueprint. It offered a complete dinner service with Mexican, Indian, Italian, Chinese and Thai food complemented by desserts, beers and wines.

It was an instant success. The people behind Globe have now moved into the city and joined the party at Piccadilly Gardens. Barburrito is more focused than its predecessor, concentrating on Mexican food, an under- represented national cuisine in Manchester.

Aside from cheap chain Chiquito, El Macho was the last Mexican to open and that was back when Shayne Ward was a mere twinkle in his mother's eyes. Barburrito is styling itself fast casual which is a phrase borrowed - you've guessed it - from our US cousins.

Food comes canteen style and is centred around Latino staples such as quesadillas, tacos, burritos and nachos and very much less traditional Latin American food such as carrot cake - you can take authenticity too far.

Drinks include smoothies and, when the licence has been granted, beer. The hands-down food winner, after a couple of visits, is the quesadilla (£3.70), a toasted tortilla sandwich with a range of fillings but best with shredded beef, cheese and chipotle salsa.

The salsa is superb, made up of wood-smoked jalapeño with red wine and honey.

For a light lunch or hot takeaway, this is as good as it gets in Manchester, right up there with the smoked haddock corn chowder at Shlurp (off Brazennose Street) and the hot pan meatloaf sandwiches and ciabbatas at Katsouris (Deansgate).
