Unicorn Grocery
89 Albany RoadChorlton, Manchester, M21 0BN
I guess that they do have a rather trademark image, with lots of their jute bags being seen everywhere these days - but for good reason. Unicorn is a great place to stock up on a range of store-cupboard items and ethical cleaning products. But the range of fresh fruit and veg, locally sourced, is great - where else would you find seasonal produce, weird and wonderful shapes and colours?...
Reviews for Unicorn Grocery
As overheard on a train in the Midlands a few weeks ago, "Those Unicorn bags get everywhere" ..
I guess that they do have a rather trademark image, with lots of their jute bags being seen everywhere these days - but for good reason. Unicorn is a great place to stock up on a range of store-cupboard items and ethical cleaning products. But the range of fresh fruit and veg, locally sourced, is great - where else would you find seasonal produce, weird and wonderful shapes and colours? There were purple peppers there last week!
Unicorn also has a great deli counter and range of chilled tofu type products (though could be argued not such a good range as eighth day!) and not to forget the organic beer section - super!
Situated on the main street in Chorlton, Unicorn is your one stopshop for vegetarian, vegan and organic food and drink.
Parking is available, just go round the block to find the entrance - there's not many spaces but you can park on the road further down (pay and display though).
Inside there's a great range of food, my personal favourite being the stuff behind the deli counter - both savoury and sweet - and the range of organic alcohol is fantastic. The cider is brilliant, just don't forget to bring your own bottle carrier or carrier bags cos they don't have any of their own.
Combined with the deli onthe other side of the road, the fishmonger's round the corner, and the Belgian Belly, you have all you need for a party or get-together!
This is a must if you are into ethical shopping, great range and tasty food.
Winner of the 2004 Best Provision for Vegetarians at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival - for the 2nd time - the survival and expansion of Unicorn in 2003 is a remarkable story. Threatened by a redevelopment of their building, the Unicorn Co-operative asked for support - in pledges and cash - from their appreciative customers. The money flowed in and, shortly after, the survival of one of the North's, and one of Europe's, largest vegetarian and vegan supermarkets was assured. The success of this can be measured by the weekend queues for the tills. The food counter stocks vegan and vegetarian snacks and delicacies such as pates, marinated olives, cheeses, cakes and pastries. Elsewhere there is a truly excellent range of health foods, wholefoods and organic produce, including some splendid wines, ciders and beers. The organic and seasonal fruit and veg might look like those on a Saturday evening game show of humorous vegetables with double entendre shapes but they really do taste more complex. There is always a range of environmentally and ethically screened goods, such as household cleaners and toiletries, available. Local suppliers are used where possible whilst a GM free policy is maintained throughout. There are events and a good children's play area.

My last visit to these premesis was a disappointment and the range of goods and prepared food was small. still It does have ethical qualities which are to be commended and it is nothing like the fleecing and sheer money grabbing cheek of Borough market in London
