Reviews for The Angel

To be avoided. Over-rated. Our expectations had already been lowered when starters took an hour to arrive without apology and when the bill arrived extra bottles of wine had been added to our bill and only some of these were ungraciously removed. We were charged for twice as much wine as we had drunk and when we asked for proof of what we ordered we were refused. For a place with a supposedly honest approach to good food of good provenance this was a suprisingly cynical experience. This is no match for the Bridge or the Chophouse. Our large party felt thoroughly ripped off. If this is how you need to operate to pay your bills then it is a sad day for Manchester.

Folk should not be fooled by his association with Henderson as this food bears no resemblance to anything served up at the mighty St Johns.

I recently visited The Angel Pub on a Friday evening with my girlfriend for a meal and a few drinks.

I had visited Roberts old pub The Bridge and was really pleased to hear that Rob would be cooking in the city again.

I started with black pudding potato cake with poached egg and tarragon sauce followed by Rib eye steak with roast tomato, mushroom and duck fat chips.

My better half had Morecombe Bay shrimp fishcake with a baby herb salad followed by Potato crusted Lancashire hot with rosemary.

The food was all fantastic and the wine and real ales that accompanied our meals were top notch.

I would definitely recommend a visit to the angel!

The Angel is on the site of the old pub The Beer House but is a thousand times better and has changed hands and has an excellent food offering. The chef is the legendary Robert Owen, formerly of The Bridge, and his menu doesn’t disappoint. We had the mussels when we went, which was a huge portion cooked in white wine and cream, accompanied by warm crusty bread. Absolutely gorgeous.
The drinks are reasonable too, and the sell Dunham Massey ale which is quite hard to come by. There’s quite a good wine list too if you like that sort of thing.
The only downside is that they don’t do Sunday lunch – but at least that means we still make it to the Marble Arch just down the road!
