Reviews for Big Hands
This little place is located next to Oxfam on Oxford Road. At first i wasn’t that keen on going in when a friend recommended it as it does look a bit dingy from the outside but its one of them places that surprises you when you get in there. There is quite a big bar on the left and there are quite a few places to sit and have a beer. But it’s a really friendly atmosphere once your in there, everyone is very friendly and up for a laugh and the prices are cheap too. Also as its close to the academy i always go in here first before going to the gig!
Big Hands is one of them places where you think its going to be really rubbish and your mate forces you in here and you say were only having one in here then were going. BUT once you get in here it’s actually a really good place to go to, especially once it’s dark. It is a really small place to go but it’s a great place to go while your waiting to go to a gig in the academy and then of course on your way out of the academy.
Its one of them places that in the day you’d just walk past it and never know it was there but for those that have discovered it you’ll all know what I mean. Definitely give it a try especially if your in the area.
Big Hands looks an awful lot better after dark, when it stops looking dark and dingy and becomes mysterious and effortlessly cool.
Every available wall is plastered with band posters which gives it a lived in and trendy feel. It's also a good clue to the fact that the music's usually pretty good, they have loads of live music, and it's often where bands playing at the Academy end up at the end of the night when everywhere else in the vicinity has stopped serving.
It's the kind of place with dark nooks and crannies that work well in the evening and it has a lived in, seen-it-all feel that makes for a relaxed but interesting atmosphere. It's a good counterbalance to minimalistic chic, sleek and shiny places. Worth a visit.
Don't be fooled by the shed-like appearance of Big Hands, it might shaped like the leg of a skinny jean but it's full of characters. Big Hands is popular for drinks after a gig at Manchester Academy but it also hoats some great dj nights. The bar is always busy but the staff are quick and if you're persuasive you can usually get a seat. It does lack a dancefloor but if you really want to you can dance where you're stood!
