Reviews for The Temple
The Temple of convenience used to be a public toilet, which restricts the size a bit but definitely adds to the atmosphere. Essentially, this is a small, dark hole in the ground, masquerading as a pub, but it carries it off really well and it's a great place for a drink with friends. You go down stairs at either end of the pub to get in and it's usually busy when you get down there, even if it's quiet in other places because it is pretty tiny. The beer list is huge, if you can actually get to the bar, which can be a bit of a mission later in the evening.
It is in a really handy place to stop off if you're moving from Oxford Road bars and pubs into town, or vice versa.
OK, don't let the fact that it's a former public toilet put you off - this place is great.
The beer menu is long, with beers from around the world, with a few others on tap for good measure.
The whole place is quite small, as you'd expect, with an entrance at each end. It gets packed out at weekends, but if you can squeeze in by the bar and wait with a drink you'll get a table soon enough.
The jukebox is extensive and one of the best in Manchester, but you'll probably be sat next to one of the band members or radio DJs anyway so at least the choices that other people make on the jukebox should be pretty good!
This place is great on a rainy afternoon as an escape from the world, so you can forget the crappy weather with good beers and good music.
The toilets are, ironically, a bit poor, but I reckon the jukebox quality makes up for it when evaluating the place.
Definitely worth checking out, especially at weekends when the DJs are on.
i'm giving this place 5 stars for quirky! it used to be a public toilet, one of those underground ones (from many years ago) so you can imagine how small it is! if you don't like small spaces you won't like it, my friend had to leave as she felt trapped! its nicely done out though and is something of a institution in manchester. its very popular with bands - for them to drink rather than play! There is also a great selection of beers and ales. if you take the quirky out if it it isn't brilliant, but there is nowhere else like it so you have to go even if its just once.
This is a really great bar - a disused underground public toilet - with all the quirkiness and charm you'd expect as a result. Needless to say the actual toilet is quite small, as is the rest of the place - yu'r struggle to fit more than 30 people in the place, but that makes for a great, intimate atmosphere. I went with my boyfriend and we sat for hours quietly talking, reminiscing of our trip to Africa (they have beers from all over the world, not just Europe). It would be fair to say its not the cheapest place in the world, but what it lacks in affordability it more than makes up for in style and charm. I absoloutely love the place and think it is an ideal spot for a date or to go to with friends. Go!!!
The Temple is another great Manchester Bar. You'll find it on your left down some stairs if you head from the Cornerhouse to St Peter's Square. The fact that it was a public toilet only adds to its quirkiness. There are a great selection of beers, especially nice Belgian ones and the juke box has a good selection. I have been in when it's been a little flooded from the rain but it really can't be beat in terms of atmosphere.
