Reviews for Chilango (previously Mucho Mas)
Having moved to the UK almost two years ago and tried just about every restaurant we pass that claims to be Mexican, this certainly is the best. For those Americans out there who enjoy Chipotle and Qdoba, here is your answer!!
Chilango is a fast casual restaurant with a warm atmosphere and a very friendly, helpful staff. The food is tasty and very fresh! The value for the meal is excellent as well, just over £5 for a burrito that will certainly leave you full!
The staff has always been helpful and accommodating. There is tons of seating so you never have to worry about finding a place to sit, which includes a nice seating area outside!
I certainly believe Chilango has out done their competition in Islington. My partner and I have tried Desperado and we use to go to Tortilla every week until we tried Chilango. There was no comparison! We eat there at least once a week. We love Chilango!!
This was my first visit to Isslington branch after the change over from Muchos Mas. Prior to this i was a frequent visitor. Unfortunately, i had read some negative reviews, but i always like to judge for myself. i must say overall i was satisfied, however i do have a couple of gripes. firstly, i was disappointed to find that the burritos were much smaller than before. I felt like i was being charged for what used to be classed as a large burrito but was the size of a small one. Secondly, i missed the extra hot sauce that used to be an option. it seems they now only have 2 sauces instead of 3 and the so called hot is similar to the medium that used to be served. Finally i was not offered salad, i had to ask for it for both burritos i ordered. the fact that they are much smaller now, you would think that the staff would want to bulk it up with a cheaper ingredient such as lettuce. In saying this the burrito as a whole was very tasty and pretty much on par with what i used to buy. with the minor fixes it would be perfect like before. I also love the new design of the place.
Definitely worse than Mucho Mas. Portions significantly smaller and the chicken isn't as good quality (haven't tried the other meats). Chilango is a very poor second to its far superior predecessor. Gobbling up the much better competition, using the same site and marketing themselves as 'previously Mucho Mas' is a good move on their part, given the inferior product. I've been to both the Fleet St and the Upper St branches, and both compare poorly to Mucho's. Chilango's is a very average Mexican. Fortunately for them, competition is rare - now, because of them, even more so.
"Sorry, it's company policy not to serve tap water". I'd like to nominate that phrase as one of the top 10 quickest way to ruin the reputation of restaurant. I was so disgusted by this I cancelled my purchase and walked out. What kind of management makes that a policy. Sorry, I'll be getting my tacos elsewhere from now on
I went here ALL the time and didn't know what to do during the refurbishment(which it never needed) I went back today - prices up by 10% and the ultimate restaurant crime - no tap water - due to 'elf n safety'- what an excuse!
It is very insulting as a customer to be told you can't have a glass of water with your meal. A rip off and environmentally inexcusable. Bottled water should be banned!
Not going back!
Ok no one likes change, but when you change something great to something like this, it's a tragedy!!
Mucho Mas was a gem of a place, great food, friendly service, BIG portions. When it closed down a couple of weeks back I figured it was just for a refurb. Sadly this aint the case, they've been bought out by these Chilango folks and basically it's not even close to being as good.
First off, only one size Burrito and that size is tiny. If you ask for more filling the new staff look at you like you said you'd like to molest their Grandma or something. Honestly if you want more than a teaspoon of guac, go elsewhere. I've just eaten my first and last burrito from there and I'm still starving.
If there were no option I suppose you'd have to live with it, however you'd be mad to chose this place over Tortilla... which is less than 100 metres down the road opposite Angel station... It's not quite as good as Mucho Mas, but a hell of a lot better than this place
I only wish this was around the corner from my house - but then again, if it were, I'd probably weigh about 10 pounds heavier.
I've been meaning to try it for a while as a self-professed burrito fanatic, but it was well worth the wait. Portion sizes were great, everything was fresh and super tasty. I'm really looking forward to my next visit.
Very good & very quick. Rich well cooked meat combined with the vibrant fresh flavours of the accompaniments. They do veggie options also but I haven't tried them. Great for lunch or a quick evening bite.
Absolutely fantastic - you have to try this place. My friend actually said it best when I brought her this week...."like a stampede of fresh flavours"... go for the steak or chicken burritos, my favorite... they have been playing around with the portion sizes but everything is back to normal (saw a comment below)... lots of great quality food for a decent price... there's also a good little coffee shop a few doors down called Tinderbox...
I have been going to Muchos Mas atleast once a week for lunch since I read a good food review about them a few months ago. My favorite thing? A good sized meal for just over a fiver! Quick, no table waiting, no hassle with waitors etc. Just simple honest generous portions and quality tastes. For Islington, this is rare. Generally you feel slightly ripped off wherever you go on Upper Street. Muchos Mas was never one of these places.
However, their portions seemed to get smaller and smaller with every visit. This was of course forgivable when they were 2 meals in one, but today I felt hungry after an hour...
Their 3 meals (burrito, salad or taco portions) are simply no longer worth it.
