Reviews for Star of India
I visited this place recently and was very dissappointed by the quality of the food and the state of decor of the place.
I had one of their "Specials" the vegetable jalfrezi. It was a cold, mess of soggy vegetables in a loads of oil, I struggled to eat it. My friends were also served cold food. We were advised that the plates were extremely hot and they needed to be. At the next table the diners were provided with hot plates however we were not.
Could this be because the host, Shah, who fancies himself as the MP for Leytonstone, fawns over the customers so that they are lured into returning despite the appalling food? The waiters are rude and surly apart from one of them. The stench of damp and mould in the toilets is overwhelming. Avoid tis place and go to The Lane in Wanstead.
This place for some unlkown reason is raved about by the local MP and Newspaper. As mentioned in an earlier review it achieved a dangerously low hygiene score and the place is visibly dirty and greasy. take a look at the carpets for example. The buffet looks very unappetising and suspect.
I cannot understand why anyone would want to eat in this place at all if only for the dreadfully poor state of it and if they valued their health I would eat elsewhere.
As for the Newsletter, this implies that they are the way above their station and I really do find it odd that once again, the local MP is regularly featured in it.
Lovely little place, with good food and a nice atmosphere. The food is very good, not too oily and flavoursome. Portion sizes are also decent. It is also reasonably priced. Haven't been there for some time so not sure if they still do a buffet, but when I used to go, the buffet offered a wide variety of dishes and was not overly expensive. Dishes worth checking out are the taarka dhal and the lamb bhuna. The last time I ate here, around Christmas time, my friend and I were given christmas presents upon leaving, several toiletries! The staff are friendly and the service is fast.
The food wasn't bad but after checking them out with environmental health I don't think I'll be dining there again in the near future.
ZERO stars as rated in July 08. To quote, "A general failure to comply with legal requirements. Little or no appreciation of food safety. Major effort required"
Until places like this clean their act up and stop putting the publics health at risk, I'd advise checking any restaurant out before eating there.
Where to begin and where to end?
The food really is overrated - it fancies itself as being quite a modern Indian food experience, which it never quite manages.
Portions are stingy, and the service is either non-existent or over-attentive.
Takeaways are equally poor - always taking a minimum of 50 minutes to arrive - they skimp on portion sizes for takeaways too, which is disappointing.
The manager of this sub-standard joint fancies himself a bit of a community leader too, and publishes a newsletter carrying news about this utterly class-free establishment and spiel about his delusions to master restauranteur.
In summation, if you really want a special sub-continent experience, then do go further afield and eat at the wonderful Indian restaurants in central London and the city. Alternatively, there are many equally good Indians in the area (Purbani in Wanstead being a case in point) - don't waste your hard earned cash in this place.
This place is filthy. Have a look at the carpet. Wonder what the kitchens are like? Had the buffet, only because the group I was with had the same. It was a load of stale rubbish dressed up in oily sauces. Well you didn't fool me. If this is the best place in Waltham Forest, I would like to know the worse!
This is purely designed for cheap end of the market to lure idiots who think they are having a good meal. Hygiene is suspect and worrying.
I have given it one star as system says you must! It ain't worth one. Quite appropriate though? STAR OF INDIA. Should be NO STAR OF INDIA.
This is an Indian restaurant that exudes class.
The decor is really inviting, rare I think for an Indian restaurant.
The food though is the thing that has to be talked about at this small restaurant in Leytonstone. The food is invariably exquisite, and most importantly it is unique. Many Indian restaurants have the same menus, and the same kind of flavours, but Star Of India, whilst keeping the classic dishes on the menu, prepares them in such a way that they are simply better than anywhere else! The chicken shashlick is divine, the chicken Jalfrezi has the perfect balance of flavours and spicyness, and the onion bhajis are juicy and flavoursome.
On top of this, the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough for curry lovers, or for curry virgins.
This is a classy little Indian that delivers. The atmosphere is lovely and friendly. The walls display awards and promotions for local life. There is a great community feel to the restaurant, as well, as genuine look. The food is excellent and the prices are great. The first time we went here, near Christmas, we got a free calendar and our meal was capped with an after dinner shot of, we think, tia maria. We were pleasantly surprised on our return to discover this little drink is the usual and not just a Christmas treat. You are also treated to a hot cloth after your meal. It is special touches like this that make this a worthwhile trip. I know we'll be going back soon.
