If you’re in central London and are looking for a great Thai, then Patara is the place to go. It’s more high-end Thai cuisine than usual, with starters around £7, mains at £13.95 and a menu that you won’t find on most Thai restaurants. The food is very much worth the prices. I met a good friend I had not seen for a long time there and we had a fantastic time. We both started with an excellent Tom Yum, which had the perfect balance of fiery hotness, delicate shitake and juicy king prawns. I followed with a main dish of calf cheek (yes the cheek of a calf!) with vegetables that melted in the mouth. My friend had a deep-fried, whole sea bass with curry sauce. I’m going for the sea bass next time I visit. Both courses where washed down with refreshing Thai Ice Tea cocktails. Great for the palette and great for the conversation too, as they pack quite a punch, mixing 4 different spirits. Nothing very special about the mango sorbet and bitter chocolate fondant, but it did a good job of finishing off the meal. The service was attentive and friendly.
Overall I really enjoyed Patara. For a three course meal a couple of extras (mushroom and broccoli) and a couple of cocktails we paid £50 each, which is at the very top of what I’ve paid for Thai before. I’d say it was worth it though. I may a little bit swayed in my rating of the whole experience as it was really good to catch up with a friend after a long time, but I would definitely recommend it.
