Reviews for Christopher's American Grill
We had dinner at 'Christopher's American restaurant' on a Saturday evening, and were mightily impressed from the word go. It has a lovely understated ambience, all white tables and crisp white decor, with beautiful large windows to let the early evening light filter through.
The staff were uniformly excellent, and their professional attention to detail was a big plus at this restaurant.
The pre-theatre dinner menu offers good value for money, and the quality of all three courses was very high. The smoked tomato soup was absolutley perfect, and I'm a soup aficionado. The portion sizes were perfect, so that three courses didn't make us feel we had to be rolled out and into the theatre.
All in all, a lovely, lovely dining experience. Christopher's is first class. Go!
Christopher's was recommended by a friend and well worth the visit. The staff are perfectly attentive and knowledgeable when it came to menu items and wines. We enjoyed a late Sunday lunch of oysters, and meltingly delicious scallops. This was followed by a succulent, perfectly gilled rib eye steak with generous sauce & sides. Food was beautifully presented but unfussy and really tasty. Not sure how "American" it is, but its very good ! We were especially impressed by the South African wines on the menu - the Graham Beck Brut is fantastic! I wouldn't hestitate recommending if you are in the West End. Gorgeous quiet setting in what can sometimes be a hectic Covent Garden.
The main problem with Christopher's American Bar, is the fact that no one in London seems to know where it is.
We asked several people, including a taxi driver, and finally found it "by accident". No one could even tell us where Wellington Street was!
Being American, I appreciated the menu and the choices offered. We had an excellent prime rib and the side dishes were also quite tasty. The wine was excellent as was the service. The staff went out of their way to be accommodating and the only other negative was perhaps the prices, which are a bit on the high side..even for London.
I recently visted Christopher's and was very impressed. The food was superb and their range of cocktails was outstanding. I will definitely be going again!
I went to Christopher's recently with some work colleagues. We started in the cocktail bar, and sampled some of their brilliant selection of very well made cocktails. Nice atmosphere in the bar too.
Dinner was excellent. Great variety of dishes, great presentation, although I was a little diappointed by the size of my desert, but all round excellent quality. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and they happily changed my drink without fuss when a mistake was made.
Would recommend Christopher's for an excellent evening out, but save up first as it is a little on the pricey side, but certainly justified.
Would highly recommend this restaurant. The food was tip top and the service friendly, unintrusive and professional. Had a thoroughly enjoyable evening there and would certainly return.
Special friends took us here as a treat after the theatre. Very impressive entrance, lively cocktail bar, candles on every step up a sweeping staircase giving lovely ambiance. The service was attentive and efficient, but the food was at best average, well presented, but my friends gaots cheese tart was soggy and tasteless, the steak small but nice, in fact all the dishes bordered on the small and unsafisfying side. the deserts were okay, the cheesecake lovely but the others were average.
For the price, if your looking for pretentious, chique and to be seen, then this is the place for you, if you want really good food then I would look elsewhere.
Christopher's ought to be perfect. It has everything going for it: an excellent location and stately building, a lovely high-ceilinged dining room, a lively downstaits bar, and good food - the steaks are terrific, and the chowder is superb. There's a good wine list, with an emphasis on the higher end of the scale, but also some moderately-priced but pleasant wines. There's also a very comprehensive cocktail menu - the Martinis are excellent.
What lets it down is shockingly bad service. I've given up going under my own steam, though I've been since as a guest, and every time the service has been quite unaccountably slow - to the point that it becomes untenable if one has somewhere to go afterwards. The nadir was the occasion when an initial drinks order was lost and, despite polite prompting, only appeared with the main course. There's not an ounce of malice or unpleasantness in the service, just what might appear to be a lack of competence. I'm prepared to take a more relaxed view in most restaurants, but if one is being asked to pay expensive prices, it's not unreasonable to expect service to be perfect.
Shame because the food is good but the service before theatre is disappointing. You may even miss the start of your show, so be careful.
A distinguished city editor proposed luncheon
midway between his city office and West End-located Magellan Labs. Christophers is the place where city meets west end; and so it was this long-established Covent Garden favourite that I proposed for our get together. Alas, I was not favoured with a front room table (you need to appear in Hello for that privilege)- but our corner table in the larger main room was not too bad. In the past, I have been placed by the kitchen door, not somewhere that Professor Magellan likes to be - ever. Christophers is owned by the legendary Christopher Gilmour
whose younger brother was a university friend and contemporary of the Professor. Christopher is often to be found working his adoring public but he may have been away on this occasion. The menu is mainly meat and the steaks are very, very good. Alas, the Hamburger is no longer an option (Christopher: if you read this you should restore the hamburger option at least at lunchtimes). My guest and I enjoyed an excellent buffalo mozzerella salad and then the 10oz sirloin. Quite excellent and pleasant and attentive service by a genuine Frenchman.
Not a cheap option however at more than £40 a head (incl mineral water and service). Not a place I would go to on a regular basis. Lots of people in suits. In fact, just the sort of place in which distinguished city editors feel right at home.
