    improving service

The Magellan PR company arranged a luncheon and forgot that the Goring is on my "banned" list as I had such a bad experience there. That was several months ago so reluctantly I agreed to try it again. And I was pleasantly surprised. The service was very much better (and more cheerful) and we got the corner window table that I insisted upon. The food was excellent (as usual) with the super carved gammon (a Friday special). My guests seemed content with their choices (mainly fish dishes). Some minor gripes: a second expensive bottle of fizzy water brought and opened (without asking whether we wanted one) and a ludicrous system whereby the dining room only opens at 12.30 when so many of us are now under time pressure and 12.00 would suit us so much better.

lovely dining room, great food, service from hell

I eat regularly at the Goring but I have never had an experience like the luncheon I endured today. Professor Magellan was meeting
one of the nation's top journos in his esoteric field of research and was accompanied by no less than 2 public relations consultants as well as the Head of Magellan Labs International: so a power luncheon was on the cards, an important occasion for all concerned.
The Goring badly disappointed. A lousy table by the kitchen door was followed by service which would put MacDonalds to shame.
Lots of uniformed staff running around but noone taking responsibilty; and a grumpiness factor that was off the richter scale. It took 25 minutes for someone to take the order. I ordered chips instead of the new potatoes that were being offered with my "dish of the day". The chips came late just as I was finishing my gammon.
The main courses did not arrive until 2.15pm (we had sat down at 1.00pm) and the bill too took forever (two reminders were necessary). When the bill finally came (nearly 300 for two courses, one bottle of wine and coffees) the chips were charged as an extra (3.75) and, worse, 5 gin and tonics had been added despite the fact that
they were nothing to do with us. No apology was forthcoming.
All in all a really horrible experience: Professor Magellan has scrubbed it off his favourites list. A shame because the food is really good. He will return when the restaurant manager has been dismissed and the legions of waiting staff thoroughly retrained.
