Kettner's
29 Romilly Street, London, W1D 5HP
A legendary part of bohemian Soho’s history, Kettner’s new look is actually much closer to its history but with a bright, fresh feel. Near most West End theatres, famous for its incredible champagne offering and renowned for its buzzing, convivial atmosphere, the restaurant suits all occasions and budgets.
Kettner’s celebrated Champagne Bar is still a central part of the venue. Its house list now features ‘one small producer’, ‘one iconic Champagne’ and ‘something from England’ by the glass. It is joined by a new Pudding Bar, a space for breakfast, tea, or late night treats. The grand main dining room has been converted into an all-day brasserie with a versatile menu of simple fresh French dishes with a quirky English twist.
Reviews for Kettner's
An alright place in this neck of the woods. the bar is not bad either.
When I saw that the boards had been cleared and Kettners was open again, I thought I'd give it a go. I had a meeting in Soho, and afterwards, popped in to try out the new menu. I only had the french onion soup, but it was delicious. I resisted a glass of red wine as it was early afternoon, but I will come back with friends. The staff were really friendly and I was made to feel welcome on my own. Perfect for a pit stop before the Curzon Soho.
Over the years I have eaten here many many times. When working in the west end, this was always my restaurant of choice for birthdays and other celebrations.
It strikes a good balance between posh and comfortable. The menu is basically Pizza Express, but the interior is all wooden panels, and sometimes there is a pianist too. It's great for taking family and not-very-adventurous friends from out of town, and I still use it as a reliable fall back option when everyone's dietary requirements and other foibles get too complicated.
I have also, on one memorable occasion, spent vast amounts of money on champagne at the bar - but I can't comment on how that compares to other similar venues as I don't unfortunately frequent champagne bars.
I love, LOVE the interior of Kettners. It is absolutely gorgeous, with a real nostalgic cruise ship feel to it. However, I find the menu strangely ordinary for such lovely surroundings. If you want posh pizza then this is the place to visit. Its the next step up from Pizza Express. Good for family dinners, pre/post theatre or a birthday night out. Its the safe options when you don't know where else to book.
Despite its shortcomings, I keep going back to Kettners in the hope that one day the menu will meet the expectations so effectively raised by the interior.
I'd never eaten here before but over the years when working in London every so often ended up to quaff some champagne for whichever account win was being celebrated. Walked in the other day at 1pm without a reservation (as El Cantina around the corner, which I'd booked, had decided that the chef wouldn't be ready until at least 2pm)and asked if we could have a table for two. The girl rolled her eyes and took us to the - empty - dining room. There was no-one sitting in the bar area sofas either. But I had a nice time, the dining room is lovely and light. I had some crab pasta parcels which were quite nice but then anything with loads of butter on it can be quite nice. Not cheap for a variety of pasta, pizza, main dishes though.
