Friendly local place, perfect for your local favourite restaurant. An institution in my family.

This building was originally a public loo, not that you'd know it now. It's had two owners since opening in the mid 90s, both of whom are/were lovely. I used to walk past it on the way to school and call in occasionally when nature dictated. Sad as I was to see the loos go, life would have been less fun had La Piccola not appeared in the loo's place.

Look beyond the appearance. The decor hasn't been updated for a while - it's the food you're here for. Pay particular attention to the specials board where the lamb diavola and steak boscaiola are particularly popular with me and my guests. These are more expensive than the menu, but worth paying extra for if you like your meat. Also ask for the raddichio/pancetta salad. Not on the menu these days but they'll do it if they have the ingredients and you ask nicely. Heaven in a starter.

Menu items are very good value too. I've paid much more for worse meals in soho - am thinking the likes of Little Italy. In these financially-afflicted times, this place is a real godsend for a good value night out. The salsiccia (spicy sausage), penne padrino and salmon fettucine are all recommended.

Best calzone you'll find for miles. And if you're really nice you might get a shot of Amaretto with the bill, particularly if you speak nicely of Napoli, the owner's team.
