Worst serivce and food ever keep away 30th August 2009

Dear all,

Please be careful in this place. Went there yesterday with my wife and 2 children. Ordered there chew main which came burnt after 50 minutes waiting. I complained to the waiter who said to me "What do you want me to do about it" in an extremely sarcastic voice, obviously this guy had 0 customer service training. I told him that I would like a freshly made chew main. He took the old chew main and brought me a new one after 20 minutes. I told him that after waiting 70 minutes was not prepared to pay for the chew main as I have already finished my meal which was nothing amazing for the price. He said fine and would remove it off the bill.
More to come… Deserts come, fried bananas with ice cream. The fried bananas were fine however in the middle of the ice cream was a solid lump of ice. Believe me if I had that I would have had to go the toilet very quickly. I took the waiter about the ice cream and he laughed and said, “do you want me to take it off the bill”. I replied “Forget it”.
My wife ordered a tea when Chinese herbal tea turned up when we wanted normal tea. Again they changed it with a bad attitude.

Finally the bill, they added more drinks then I had and added an alcoholic drink when my family and I don’t drink alcohol. They even left the chew main on the bill. I asked the waiter that he said he would take off the bill and the waiter told me that because I had tried it I had to pay for it even though he said earlier he would take it off the bill??? I asked for the manager and he replied “He is having his dinner and you will have to wait”. By this time I was become very annoyed and said either call the manager now or I am walking out now and paying you nothing. He snatched the bill and within 3 minutes he gave me a new bill and threw it on the table.

These guys are jokers and have nothing special to offer. If you don’t believe me go to the restaurant and you will see for your self…

I went here last night with a couple of girl friends for a catch up. I recommended the restaurant as I have been many times before and have always enjoyed the food - especially the vegetarian selections. The 'chicken flavour with chilli and lemon grass' is my favourite. I ordered the same last night but was disappointed as it tasted differently to how it had previously, and I felt that it was not to the same high standard. One friend - also a veggie - ordered vegetarian Singapore noodles, and when she was half way through she found prawns in the noodles. She won't be going back. Despite this, the atmosphere was relaxed - we were seated next to the koi fish pond and fountain - and we spent two hours in the restaurant without any harrassment from the waiters. The decor, value for money, service and relaxed atmosphere is to a high standard - just not the food on this occasion. I am sure I will be going back there again in the future, but perhaps with more trepidation than I have previously - and will be careful not to recommend this restaurant to vegetarian friends again!

I had driven past this restaurant many times and never really noticed that it was there. Tucked in between a pub and an Indian, and only a stone's throw from Wanstead Station sat this beautiful, evocative and unassuming Vietnamese restaurant.

It was a mysterious place and I was drawn to it. I decided that tonight was the night to check it out, and I was dragging my husband and little sister along with me.

As soon as I got to the heavy wooden door I was wowed. As I turned the handle I felt the weight of the promises that lay beyond it and I was very excited.

As the door closed behind me, I felt that I had entered another world. Wanstead High Street was no more and I was in a hotel lobby in the middle of Vietnam. The plush sofas and dark wood overlooked the spread of tables, mirrors and pictures of Vietnam.

We got to our table and I looked through the menu. I was disappointed that there weren't many things that were different from my local Chinese takeaway...only more expensive.

Given that this was a Vietnmese restaurant, I tried the mango and chicken salad, I thought that maybe that could be authentically Vietnamese - but then maybe Vietnamese and Chinese food are similar - I'm not sure! It wasn't bad I guess, different could be a good description, but then mango is one of those fruits that could dress up nearly anything. At almost £7 and only a starter, I hoped the the promises I felt earlier were not broken already.

My sister tried the minced chicken wrapped in lettuce which was tasty but very salty.and didn't quite live up to what we'd seen on the travel programmes we'd watched.

We moved onto the main course. Quickly.

I was brought the prawns in golden pancake. Golden pancake ...sounds yummy doesn't it? Well I hoped that it would be, but I was disappointed by the dish that appeared before me. It was really just a thin sweet and sour sauce with (thesaving grace) big juicy prawns on what appeared to be a rolled out and floppy giant prawn cracker (the golden pancake).

My husband decided he'd go for the safe option. Sweet and sour pork and egg fried rice. Unfortuntely, I'm not sure how safe this option actually was, as the pork had been refried in stale oil and was definitely not fresh - it may even have been classed as a toxic substance; he was unable to finish it all.

But the best part of the night was still to come. My friend had warned me that when she had visited this restaurant earlier in the year she was lucky that she had checked her bill. She found a couple of extra drinks had been added and a dish that she hadn't ordered. They had also put the wrong amount on her card. She had warned me against this restaurant but I thought that this must have been a mistake.

Even so, I was vigilant when I got the bill, and lo and behold, I had an extra coke added. I asked for this to be removed which was easy enough but as I walked out of this disappointing restaurant with a disappointing meal in my tummy, I found that they had charged me extra for the privilege by putting in the wrong total onto my card - and silly me, I didn't check everything quite well enough. Disappointing.

I have to say this place is just excellent. My girlfriend and I paid a visit and we were firstly impressed by the great decor and relaxed atmosphere. The service is extremely warm and friendly and staff cannot do enough. We opted for one of the set menu's for two, which was seafood heaven. The food is very fresh and full of flavour.
We will certainly be returning to what has to be one of our best dining experiences,seriously !!!

Must agree with the other review, the decor is outstanding, from the outside the restaurant doesn't look that impressive,but inside makes up for it. The food is very good and the service of a good standard. Would recommend this place.

The first thing to mention about this restaurant is the decor - it truly is like walking into another world. My whole family were stunned to silence on entering this large and highly dramatic restaurant - it is just so incredibly beautiful!
The second positive to mention is the quality of food. I invariably will order scallops in black bean sauce, which is hugely generous in the number of succulent scallops it contains, and incredibly tasty! The usual suspects are also all very good, such as crispy aromatic duck, prawn toasts, seaweed etc. The only thing that I think is not up to scratch in this restaurant is the chicken. I'm not sure how they prepare the chicken dishes, but I believe they must boil/steam the meat. Unfortunately, this seems always to have been done to excess, and the resulting texture tends to be over dry and slightly chewy. All other meats are prepared to absolute perfection however, and I just tend to steer clear from the chicken dishes!

I recommend this restaurant for couples as the atmosphere is extremely romantic.
