Reviews for Fishworks Seafood Cafe
I'll explain what I mean by that...
Food quality is simply fantastic. Fish are prepared and cooked to the perfection. Service quality too is better than pretty much any Central London restaurant I have been to. There is absolutely nothing to complain there.
But here's the thing, I have been to their Marylebone branch more than I can remember. It's only a short walk from our office in Queen Anne. The problem is I never actually paid for my food! It wasn't until I took my dad there for lunch when I realised £45 per person wasn't quite worth it. Of course we drank good wine and ate good food. But £90 for two?! Come one!
And here's the other thing I did not like at all: "Tip is included." Now that is just cheap. Very cheap.
As an entrepreneur I find that the ‘number of times I'm taken out to lunch or dinner'/'number of hours I work' is orders of magnitude lower than the one I used to enjoy in the corporate world. I also find the satisfaction gained / effort put in to be much higher though, so no real trade off. Anyway I'm digressing. This was one of the few times that we were going out for lunch and someone else was paying. They were really not splashing out though, as they had booked a Strada – now nothing wrong with Strada, in fact it's great value and the food always good....hang on I'm blending two reviews here. Anyway long story short, I'm waiting for the people from the agency to arrive and Fish Works caught my eye.
I didn't eat properly, but had a few oysters while waiting for the other lunch. Hadn't had any for years and could not resist the voices. I can tell you that the quality of the seafood on this place is top notch. You could tell by the cuts of tuna, the clear eyes of the sea bream, the freshness of the oyster - generally everything on display looked like it had come from Bilingsgate market a few hours ago. Correction they get fish from the auction at the port of Brixham every morning. You can even buy fish the same way from their website –fishworks.co.uk – although I can't bring myself to receive fish through the letterbox.
The staff were also very friendly and cool and happy to have a quick chat, although they were extremely busy. I'm definitely going there again to have a proper meal, rather than just gulp down oysters.
There are a number of other FishWorks venues across London, let us know if you've been to any of them.
Fish Works is a small chain all about fish. The place is a restaurant, a shop where you can buy your quality fish, and from what I understand it's also a cooking school. They have an interesting website which starts with: "We're all about eating, buying and enjoying fabulous seafood." This is reflected not just in their website but also in their shops/restaurants.
The fish is beautiful displayed in a fresh and enclosed way. There was this beautiful huge piece of Tuna that just tantalised you in taking a bite into it!
The staff work briskly on the shop side of the place serving customers buying products on the go and also preparing some of the orders for customers in the restaurant. Sokratis and I were passing by when the sudden urge for an oyster took us. The oyster was great, delicious, full of flavour and incredibly fresh. Probably the freshest oyster I've had in London recently.
The restaurant looked nice and I'd love to try it out one day. Now if you're looking for high quality fish and have the budget to follow your appetite then you'll love Fish Works.
Thanks for your comment... that's great as I haven't yet tried the restaurant but now I'll definitely try it out... especially the lobsters!
