Reviews for Snows on the Green - CLOSED
We were long overdue a nice meal out together - babies and work had got in the way. So I looked on TP for local places to eat, and read the reviews that suggested it was quality food, nice atmosphere, not OTT.
I can't claim to be a real foodie - but even by my modest standards, the food was a bit lacklustre. Maybe it was the regular chef's night off - it was a weeknight (can't remember which).
The Americans at the next table who were there for a farewell dinner, were complaining a bit about it, too, according to my eavesdropping wife....
But the atmosphere was nice and dark and cosy and the company was 5 star, so we had a nice evening anyway.
This is a good address to note. The ambience is neutral, slightly design, not over the top. Just enough to make the restaurant stand out from the others in the area. The food is mediterranean and quite enjoyable. A good address if you want to reward yourself, or to please someone you love.
In the days when I used to work round here (quite recently, as it happens), we used to grade the local lunch places by who was taking us or who we were taking, as you do. Starting with the caff by the kebab shop and working up to Snow's, passing the Queen's Head on the way, depending on who was paying and how friendly we were feeling.
Sickeningly shallow, I know. Hey ho.
Anyway, Snow's was invariably the venue for happy supplier meetings, serving top quality, beautifully turned out food at very reasonable prices. You could go off-piste and ratchet the bill up if you wished, but the prix fixe menus never disappoint. The wine list works well for a lunchtime glass, and should you wish you can easily be in and out in reasonable time.
If you're in striking distance of Snow's and need a place to get lunch, even if you're with someone you'd like to impress a little, give them a call and they'll sort you out.
I've not been in the evening though, in a vague attempt to separate work from that other thing I do, so I can't comment on that end of things.
My benchmark restaurant in London that I compare all others to in terms of value for money (I hope this will not lead to price increases!), quality of food and tempting dishes offered on the menu. The fixed price 2/3 course lunch/dinner takes some beating especially in view of the inclusion of dishes that you would otherwise not find on a fixed course menu. And then there is the a la carte menu which includes pan fried foie gras with a fried egg and brioche in addition to other delectable choices. The restaurant itself is well set out (not cramped and with elegant minimalist decor) and the staff are well trained. We have never had anything but a superb meal here and had a memorable wedding dinner here three years ago.
Sebastian Snow has been hosting and cooking at his restaurant for over 10 years. Both locals and business folk continue to praise the airy ambience and friendly staff.
Long established Snows on the Green retains a modern, contemporary feel with a mix of black and white Bill Brandt photography, beautiful French Farmhouse furniture and ochre walls all set in a very Manhattan clubby sort of way, which makes one feel completely at ease in the surroundings you are dining in.
Whether it´s a bowl of linguine with crab or a steak frites or roasted cod with clams and chorizo you want, Snows has all the credentials of what a local restaurant should be and more.....
