    A bedouin tent in Clapham?

I wasn't sure about dinner and drinks in Clapham; it seemed like a silly way to spend a Friday night. But as we marched past the teeming bars and restaurants on the high street and ducked down a side road that seemed pretty barren, I got the idea we were going somewhere a little bit different. Cafe Cairo is a welcome example of originality in that part of London. Once I'd squeezed past the bar and kitchen area, I found myself in the back section of the restaurant, a lovely, dimly-lit cushioned area. Sitting down, and sharing some wine and a shisha, I felt like I was in an authentic North African cafe, a million miles from London. The drinks are expensive, but the mezze are pretty good value (6, 9 or 13 depending on size and content) and the atmosphere is just right for drinks with friends. It was busy - thriving in fact - but the chilled music and the seating layout allows for a relaxed and intimate evening. Very close to Clapham North station.

Now I lived 5 mins from this place for 3 years never knew it existed. What a shame. I was dragged along there last night after capoeira in Stockwell, fuming that our regular cheap Portuguese haunt had been overlooked in favour of a new pretender. Why, I asked myself, would we bother going somewhere further away and probably more expensive? Valid questions, I'm sure you'd agree. However, I was pleasantly surprised. While the drinks were very expensive (3.20 for a pint of San Miguel) the numerous upsides made this more than a decent novelty venue. For a start this hidden place is very different to your average Clapham hangout. With comfy pod seats and cushions aplenty, its coziness personified. Dim lighting and cool (if a little bizarre) music add to the tone and get you in a very calm zone. Shishas are available with multiple flavours (7.50 a pop) for those who are that way inclined. There's even a roaring open fire, which will come in very handy this coming winter. Last, but not least, the young lady behind the bar was extremely friendly and gave me a very generous taster measure of the lovely red wine I purchased as an alternative to overpriced, imported beer. I'll definitely go back, maybe on a weekend when they feature jazz and dub DJs. Why not try it out too?
