Reviews for Edokko
A traditionally styled Japanese restaurant with a sunken table area upstairs and booths and sushi bar downstairs. Book ahead, as even on week nights most tables will be reserved, though you'll probably always get a place at the bar.
The sashimi was fresh and tasty and the mackerel sushi in particular is wonderfully prepared and very much recommended. Edammame and noodle soups all fine and properly seasoned, as they should be. There's also a hidden Japanese menu with some more exotic items for those in the know! Dessert was the traditional variety of ice creams: green tea, red bean and sesame. You might want to skip dessert though as every time I've eaten here we've received some complimentary slices of melon to finish the meal, which is a nice touch and more than enough to satisfy a sweet tooth.
Our bill has almost always been around £100 for two with Japanese beers and tea.
This restaurant is owned by Ito-san, who trained to be a Sushi chef under one of Japan's top Sushi chefs in Tokyo. Edokko means 'Child of Tokyo'...
The food is superb and like many of the UK Japanese Sushi chefs, Ito-san rises early in the morning to go to the fish market and select the fish himself. If it is one thing that Japanese Sushi chefs know about - it's fish and freshness.
I truly recommend the food, the atmosphere and the service, and prices have risen owing to food price increases across the country, but I still think it is very good value considering to the quality of the food.
Can be very crowded in evenings and lunchtimes - make sure you book.
Stephen.
I went to this restaurant a few years ago, so it may be unfair to do a review now. Anyhow, I think it is worth saying that it is worth the experience but expect it to be rather fiendishly expensive.
This is a traditional Japanese and Sushi experience, so take a step out of London for a moment. You will be asked to remove your shoes and put on some slippers. The tables are all sunken into the floor, so you are at a very low level and you are likely to be surrounded by groups of Japanese business men having a jovial dinner. I remember being impressed by the sushi and all the trimmings but the thing I remember most is the atmostphere. It was a novelty and a memorable experience.
On certain nights of the week it looked like there was karaoke in the basement. Unsure if you would be welcome or not...
