Favela Chic is a Brazilian bar and restaurant decorated in the style of a shanty town. The food is above average, but the main draw is the bar and music, which attracts a huge crowd later in the evening.

Reviews for Favela Chic

Update- november 2008
had a lunch there and the food was horrible!
Dinner menu is supposed to be different.
I think the best use of this place is for dancing
rather than eating...

old review:

Be aware there will be long long queue outside so it really helps if you know the doorman... The Dj is somewhere in the sky very far from the dance floor- strange because I always thought that there needs to be a clear line of communication between the dj and the crowd... what I really liked is that the menu is actually inside a book- at least it was when I was there. So you basically turn the pages and then on page 68 or so you can find the menu! genius! food was just ok and a bit pricy- cocktails= "I like it!"
it is worth to go because of the dancing on the weekend! By the way if you listen to Favela chic music there ask your Brazilian friend to translate you the meaning of the words it is a big laugh...

I agree with Mundek when he says that the staff seemed completely up themselves, but I would particularly point the door staff. The DJ seemed to be relaxed and he was enjoying himself mixing different kind of music. I liked the decoration, the high ceilings and the ambiance. It gets a bit packed at a certain time though. evening. (£5 entrance fee after 11h30)

Firstly, I'm not sure what is so chic about a shantytown, but never mind. On my visit I found this place moderately irritating to be honest. Most of the crowd and stafff seemed completely up themselves, the music was too loud and not really to my taste. I don't think I'd rush back, there are much better bars in the area. I have never eaten here, so can't comment on the food.

Following the reccommendations on TrustedPlaces I decided to organize a party for about 25 people at Favela Chic last Saturday. I hadn't been there before....but I knew it was going to be good based on what I was reading....and I was right!

We had so much fun! We went there early as wanted to avoid the possible queue and enjoy some quality time with our friend Dora visiting from Australia. The night started quiet with some drinks, food and chats...but after the DJ started playing some very cool music and we had enough caipirinhas...well I can just look at the pictures and remember how much fun it was!
The place is just great....I hear the food is OK but that's not a problem, you go there for the excellent music, the place, the atmosphere and the crowd. It then helps to be with about 25 very nice and cool friends as it happened to me on Saturday.

Am guessing one of those chums was Ladis19...with 7 reviews I really should pull a finger out and get down there it seems...

The crowd is cool and unpretentious but not exactly “beautiful people”. And the venue as it happens is far more Favela than Chic. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder….

Well, I went to Favela Chic on Saturday night with around 25 people. As per previous reviews, I got there for 8.30pm and as we had a massive table booked didn't queue at all. I have to say the night started off very badly with what cannot be described as anything else but very poor microwaved food at an extortionate price. Hence the 3 stars rather than 4

The night however got progressively better as the crowd started to arrive and the music got louder and better. Walid is absolutely correct in what he says about the DJ. The mix is very eclectic and the crowd reacts very well to it. The choice of song always seems to hit the spot.

Didn't get to taste all those lovely drinks as I was driving but definitely one of the best nights out I've had in a very long time, even sober. Shame that it is so far away from home.

A spit and tread kind of bar, but cleverly done.... good bar service even when busy. Best to get there early to avoid queuing (on saturday night that was). Good music and top place to have a proper dance and party..... good crowd, worth a visit.....

Favela Chic was a fantastic discovery for me. I‘d organised for some friends to go for drinks there and they all loved it. Whilst the deco doesn't bear much relation to its name, it does remind me of an old, dilapidated Havana bar. Its most prominent features are its very high ceilings, where the DJ has a boot high up, overlooking the crowd. The music’s cool and varied (electronica, contemporary Brazillian, funk etc) and the drinks tasty and affordable. The crowd is unpretentious and friendly - basically there to enjoy the music and have a good time. It’s getting well known now, so to avoid long queues, get there before 9pm. You can also eat there, and whilst I haven’t yet tried the food, I was told the steaks there are massive and pretty tasty too.

On the downside, it can get a bit too crowded sometimes, so less space to dance.. go early!

I hear the food is pretty good and does a good job in reproducing Brazilian food I was told.

I remember when I first discovered Favela Chic I thought... GREAT! Finally a place with normal, cool, friendly, un-pretentious people. The venue is of a decent size, the ceiling height is very high thus when it gets crowded (and crowded it will get) it doesn't get too hot thanks to the high ceilings. The decoration isn’t like a favela nor too exotic with some slight Brazilian themes to it here and there.

Now lets talk about the drinks... ooooh the drinks. Favela Chic makes great caipirinhas and mojito at about £5 a drink. Not too expensive especially after tasting them you realise the good dosage of alcohol that’s in them.

The music is incredibly diverse... you could find yourself dancing to some samba music and suddenly you'd hear a tune from the Chemical Brothers quickly followed by a remix of Edit Piaf's "La Foule". Thus a very eclectic music choice, but quite nicely blended in.

All in all if you want to find a place which has a wide range of music, fun and normal people, great drinks then I strongly recommend Favela Chic. Whilst there is no entrance fee do try to come before 21:00 or you’ll find yourself queuing outside!

It seems that the success of favella chic has brought in a certain kind of clientelle who maybe just come to pull or just to be seen. Feel that it is slightly pretentious. Now more likely to get agro from the bouncers and get turned away. Usually when you do get in it is too packed and a bit too hot. Still can't get over the oxymoronic name. However the music is good and the ladeez....

....and the ladeez... can be quite cute!!!
