Reviews for San Carlo
It makes me mad that people can so easily upload bad reviews in such an unfair way without assesing the damage they do. This is a fine restaurant that i have been to many times. The new owner has obviously spent heavily and made the restaurant far more friendly and enjoyable. I would like to say that anyone who wants a destination restaurant in N london should take the time to try San Carlo, i certainly would reccomend it. Chris. managing Director and loyal customer.
I ate at San Carlo yesterday and the food was terrible, the staff were unaware of which of the many dishes were unavailable and the manager was very rude to the table next to us who were (quite rightly) complaining about the food. There were a total of 7 people in the entire place all evening and it appeared that the Jazz duo advertised were drinking at the bar as we arrived and then left with their instruments without playing a note. The bill was very expensive for what was an evening of poor food in a restaurant with no atmosphere and the only entertainment being an argument between a customer and the manager.
San Carlo used to be fantastic, but it has lost its charm and has lost its identity.
For some reason the new owner painted the walls black and hired loads of non english speaking staff. That did not work so she has now hired Americans, they are very nice but it would be better if they where trained to know the menu a little better without having to 'go and ask the chef' The food is very expensive,(well someone has to pay for the owners Porche) the food looks good, but it does not live up to expectations.
This used to have the reputation of being the best restaurant in Highgate, now its simply the most expensive
San Carlo has been a restaurant in Highgate for about 30 years.. but since Feb 07 is under new ownership.
The new owner is a very attractive woman called Gail, who has spent lots of money doing a complete re-furb.
The place has lost it's stuffiness and is a lot more relaxed and stylish now.
They serve food all day, so you can have anything from snacks (burger, omellete, fajitas etc) to a posh 3 course lunch right the way through to dinner.
Also at weekends they serve brunch all day ('til 5pm I think).
Anyway... it's now very nice and they have a pretty garden out back for use in summer.
