Japanese alternative
Yakitoria is an alternative: an alternative to the sushi chains like Yo Sushi! in Paddington station, or an alternative to the little Japanese canteens in Soho...
This place is huge, modern, hype, and empty! In this business district, week days are not very busy for dinner, so you are sure to be able to enjoy some delicate Japanese food in a quiet design environment. It is certainly more busy at lunch time.
Noodles, sushi, sashimi, tempura, gyosa, skewers. Everything you would expect from a decent Japanese venue are on the menue. Food is well portioned and fresh, whilst service is kind and of great standard, all of which explains the not so affordable price list. The basics remain acceptable, but the bill can rapidly rocket if you are like me a great fan of sushi.

Great seaweed salad
Yakitoria looks pretty cool, has great views overlooking the canal and serves some smashing dishes. The food can range from average to excellent-the sushi normally does not disappoint. The seaweed salad is also worth a try. There is some background music, which can be a bit disruptive, especially if you want to have a business meal, but its fine for evenings with friends. Not a bad place to know of in the Paddington area.

What a great place
The food is great, but the service a bit lost in space. The bar downstairs is really cool, but shame the ambience isn't (I have been now around 5 times, and usually is almost empty).

Tranquility, trend and taste
This is a new place in Sheldon Square that only people in the know could ever find! It is hidden in Paddington Central - only a few metres from the main Bishop's Bridge Road but very tranquil as it is right on the canal front.
In the summer it is possible to sit outside, sipping one of the sake cocktails and people-watch. In the winter, the large floor to celing windows enable you to do the same thing.
The service is not bad, but the staff are not particularly charming. However, any shortfall on service is made up for with the food. I loved the pizza sushi but, as one of my favourite foods is pizza, that is not a surprise!
It is worth saving room for the prawn dish on the list of main courses - it is just delightful and I could not go to this restaurant without having it. It is one huge prawn, grilled and flavoured and is delicious.
There is a neat bar downstairs, which never seems very busy but I expect that it is popular for private parties. Personally, I would prefer a table upstairs with the view.

Great food and close to Paddington so skip Yo Sushi!
Yakitoria is quite new and is located in the Sheldon Square development of Paddington Central. It is a short and pleasant walk from the Hammersmith & City line end of Paddington Station on one side and Little Venice on the other.
Many of the tables have a view of the canal outside and in the summer the large glass windows can be opened for an upmarket al fresco experience.
Yakitoria is struggling a little with its location - great if you're a local resident, or you realise how close it is to Paddington, but very few passers-by, out of the centre and no easy parking.
However, on a Friday night it was fairly busy, and the service did not suffer as a result. On other weekdays it was quiet.
The food is excellent. Somehow, London's Japanese restaurants manage to source tuna and salmon that are simply better quality than the European places busy serving tuna steaks and grilled salmon.
The sushi was delicious, with a fair fish-to-rice proportion. The wasabi was good too. There are some innovative sushi choices (Pizza Nigiri) which make the restaurant more palatable to non-sushi lovers.
The Sake list is impressive and while our waiter did seem to be bluffing when he advised the differences between our two choices, the drink itself was very tasty and not overpriced.
The hot food (main course) was tasty but not exceptional - Wagyu beef should be amazing, not just good.
The Edamame beans were well prepared but not up to the standard of Chino Latino (qv).
Conclusion: if you've got time on arrival at Paddingon, and a budget for a more upmarket meal, don't bother with Yo Sushi in the station concourse... head to Yakitoria and enjoy a jolly good westernised Japanese experience.
