Reviews for Cafe Emm
We popped here for pre-theatre dinner before going to a show at Prince Edward Theatre. Although it was a busy Friday night we were seated quickly and we didn't have to wait long for food. The food was good, simple fayre and there was a good choice avaliable. I also found the staff friendly. Really good value for money, even for outside London.
The menu contains a large selection of international dishes. The service was polite enough although there was a little bit of a wait for our food. I didn't find the food to be that tasty or well cooked, but the main attraction with this place is the cost of a meal, it's very cheap!
Another attraction is that you don't have to share your table with other people so at least you can have a private conversation with your friend or partner without people overhearing what is being said.
The restaurant is very central so it's near to where all the nightlife is.
Looking for a pre-theatre dinner in Soho recently, we stumbled upon this little place and were attracted by the simplicity and competitive price of its set menu. A friendly welcome and a table by the open window on this warm evening seemed a promising start, and all three of us found something to tempt us on the somewhat limited menu. I have to say however that we found it a bit disappointing, certainly compared to other reviewers here - maybe we were just unlucky, or maybe they don't try so hard with their set menu, although I often find the opposite to be true.
The goats cheese salad that Chris and I had chosen wasn't a great start. The cheese was very thinly scattered, and there was no sign of the promised avocado, although this was partly compensated for by plenty of tasty olives. Ingrid enjoyed her chicken terrine but wasn't excited by it. I was the winner though when it came to main courses, as my salmon was nicely cooked and presented on a small mound of good pesto mash. Ingrid and Chris had both chosen the linguine in a tomato sauce, and this was somewhat overcooked - indeed, it was likened by Chris to tinned spaghetti!
On the plus side, the meal was very cheap for central London at £8.95 a head for two courses, and the friendly and efficient service ensured we made it to the theatre with plenty of time to spare.
Good food, fairly priced. The menu has something for everyone. Not over complicated, well cooked, well served food. Good atmoshphere even when half empty and the waiting staff are pleasent.
If you don't know where to eat in Soho and don't want to spend a fortune you can't really go wrong here.
Great buzzy soho bistro. Service is friendly and efficient. Food is good simple and well priced. House wine gluggable and on last visit fish and chips perfectly cooked.
I know that English food isn't exactly revered around the world, but we have got a couple of dishes that fit the bill like sausage and mash, toad in the hole, a full roast dinner, steak and ale pie with chunky chips and ketchup…the list goes on. Certainly our food is not complicated like Thai or Indian (my favourites), not fresh and cleverly simple like Italian, nor rich and sumptuous like French. Just good, nutritious, tasty, filling, hearty and honest.
If you want that old nostalgic home-cooked kind of food then this place always does it just right, in a great location - it's not quite cheap as chips...but very reasonable none-the-less. It probably maintains it's character by being family-run, so it's the real McCoy.
It's also got some International favourites on the menu, but again, the type you grew up with like Lasagne.
